Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Health Physics Coordinator supports and maintains the institution's radiation safety program across a large academic medical center and affiliated outpatient clinics. This role conducts radiation safety monitoring, equipment quality assurance, radioactive materials tracking, and waste management in accordance with regulatory requirements. The Health Physics Coordinator responds to radiation incidents, supports emergency operations, and applies established policies and professional judgments to ensure regulatory compliance, personnel safety, and operational continuity.

Job Responsibilities

• Administers the institutional personnel radiation monitoring program by issuing and collecting dosimetry devices, maintaining exposure records, trending dose data, and initiating investigations for exposures approaching control limits.
• Notifies affected staff and supervisors and recommends corrective actions in coordination with Health Physicists.
• Conducts radiation surveys, contamination assessments, and wipe testing in clinical, laboratory, and patient-care environments. Documents findings and verifies compliance with regulatory standards and departmental procedures.
• Implements radioactive contamination controls for therapeutic patient rooms by installing protective coverings, monitoring surfaces, and authorizing removal following confirmation of acceptable contamination levels.
• Manages receipt, storage, internal distribution, and shipment documentation for radioactive materials entering and leaving the institution, ensuring accuracy, traceability, and regulatory compliance.
• Maintains radiation detection and monitoring equipment programs, including inventory control, preventive maintenance tracking, calibration coordination, and vendor service engagement.
• Coordinates vendor interactions for installation, maintenance, and servicing of radiation safety and monitoring equipment.
• Performs laboratory radiation safety measurements and quality assurance testing using established protocols to ensure accuracy and reliability of safety systems.
• Operates and maintains radiation monitoring and detection instruments, ensuring readiness for routine operations and emergency response.
• Executes radioactive and non-radioactive waste management activities, including collection, testing, packaging, storage, transportation coordination, and disposal record maintenance in accordance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
• Supports emergency response operations involving radiological incidents, including on-site events and off-site medical response scenarios, applying radiation safety controls and escalation procedures.
• Maintains sealed source inventories, conducts leak testing, and ensures compliance with source control and reporting requirements.
• Provides technical support to Medical and Health Physics staff and supports operational continuity of the radiation safety program through assigned projects and clinical coverage.
  
  

Education

• A minimum of an Associate's Degree in Physical or Biological Sciences preferred.
  
  

Experience

Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in radiation safety operations, health physics support, or related technical environment, or an equivalent combination of experience and specialized training.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Must be familiar with the rules and guidelines of pertinent regulatory and accrediting bodies (NYC-DOH, NYS-DOH, and JC).
• Must be able to interface with all levels of hospital staff and possess excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Must be physically able to bend, reach, pull, push and lift up to 40 pounds without mechanical assistance.
• Must be able to respond to radiation emergency as needed.
