Job Type: Part-Time | School Year Position
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM (approx.)
Hours: 15–20 hours per week
Compensation: $18–$20/hour (based on experience)
Start Date: September 2026
About We Got Next Sports (WGX):
We Got Next Sports (WGX) is a youth development organization dedicated to positively influencing the lives of young people through the vehicle of sports. Our programs combine athletics, academics, and social-emotional learning (SEL) to create safe, engaging spaces where youth can grow on and off the court.
Serving communities across New York City, WGX focuses on teamwork, discipline, leadership, and personal growth while providing high-quality afterschool and enrichment programming.
Position Summary:
A successful WGX Group Leader brings a strong positive youth development approach, building meaningful relationships with participants and families. This role supports the academic, physical, social, and emotional growth of youth while maintaining a safe, structured, and engaging environment.
Group Leaders deliver age-appropriate programming aligned with WGX standards, collaborate with staff and school partners, and demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of their work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and lead engaging sports, enrichment, SEL, and recreational activities aligned with WGX programming themes
- Build strong relationships with students and foster a safe, inclusive, and positive group environment
- Supervise a group of participants, ensuring engagement, structure, and effective behavior management
- Provide daily homework help and support academic growth
- Prepare youth for games, showcases, and special events
- Support arrival, dismissal, snack distribution, and daily transitions
- Serve as a positive role model and reinforce program expectations
- Collaborate with WGX staff and communicate professionally with families and school partners
- Participate in required trainings, meetings, and professional development sessions
Qualifications & Certifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Minimum of 2 years experience working in afterschool (OST), youth development, or education programs
- Strong classroom/group management and behavioral support skills
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Ability to support youth academically in math, reading, and general studies
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a plus
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and professionalism
Preferred Skills (Not Required)
- Experience leading sports such as basketball, flag football, or recreational games
- Background in social-emotional learning (SEL) or restorative practices
- Experience working within NYC DOE or DYCD-funded programs
- Ability to lead structured group activities with energy and confidence
Physical & Compliance Requirements
- Ability to actively engage in sports and recreational activities (standing, moving, demonstrating activities)
- Ability to supervise youth in both indoor and outdoor settings
- Keep active standing with DOE/ DOH
