What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Homelessness Systems Improvement (YHSI) Youth Specialist position at WAYNE-METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY?
Scope:
The Youth Homelessness Systems Improvement (YHSI) Youth Specialist will be a systems and project coordinator that is organized and a self-starter dedicated to helping manage a Local and Regional Youth Action Board who are a part of a HUD-funded regional planning effort to transform the homelessness response system for youth and young adults across three Continuum of Cares. The Youth Specialist is expected to play a significant role in the overall day to day coordination of YAB related activities including: meeting coordination, leading and participating in committees, supporting YAB projects and community wide initiatives. Participate and support YHSI project strategic planning implementation and coordination of Youth led efforts.
Essential Functions
- Work with the YHSI Manager to develop and maintain detailed project plans, timelines, and resource allocation to achieve Youth Leadership Capacity Building.
- Continuously cultivate and coordinate the YHSI project steering committee and related workgroups toward project objectives.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with local and regional Youth Action Boards and YHSI partners.
- Coordinate virtual and in-person meetings, workshops, convenings, and training sessions with YAB members, stakeholders and partners to ensure collaboration and continued engagement.
- Support the planning of annual regional conferences.
- With support of the YHSI Manager monitor and evaluate project progress, ensuring alignment with objectives and deadlines.
- With support of the YHSI Manager help prepare and present regular progress reports to funders, the YHSI project steering committee and key stakeholders, Continuums of Care, and the community.
- Work to ensure all project activities are informed by youth voice, culturally competent, and inclusive of populations of youth who are disproportionately impacted by homelessness
- Work with the YHSI Manager to create, evaluate, and monitor documents, forms, sheets, and other materials to support the work of the YAB
- Maintain a positive attitude towards assigned work, clients, and staff, and a willingness to work with others.
- Perform work in a professional manner that upholds Wayne Metro’s policies and procedures.
- Represents Wayne Metro at external meetings and events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This job operates in a professional office environment with usually a quiet noise level, along with frequent work in outside weather conditions, and driving. This is largely an active role and the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, and frequently use hands and to talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree; OR a combination of education and experience that is similarly equivalent.
- A minimum of four years of experience in a related field.
- Knowledge of Wayne County demographics, the needs of the homeless and those at-risk of homelessness in Wayne County and services available to meet those needs.
- Ability to collect and evaluate data regarding service needs, present services, and service gaps; and through such an evaluation, develop means through which to address those service gaps. Experience with the Michigan Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) preferred but not required.
- Possess strong organizational, collaborative, and interpersonal skills to ensure that supportive services are delivered to eligible clients through engagement, education, and systems development.
Minimum Competencies:
- Working knowledge of basic internet applications and programs including Google technology and Microsoft Office Word and Excel. The ability to learn and utilize the necessary programs for this position.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
- Ability to work remotely as needed.
- Good interpersonal and professional skills including but not limited to professional appearance, tact, punctuality, and dependability.
- Ability to provide services for those persons facing economic, social, health, age, and educational barriers.
- Ability to work independently or in a team environment (as deemed necessary).
- Perform work in a manner that upholds Wayne Metro policies and procedures.
Licensing and Other Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Travel Requirements:
- Ability to travel to various sites.
Work Hours: Work schedule to be determined by program need.
