Position Title: Assistant Director of Food Services
Reports To: Director of Food Services
Employment Status: Full-Time ( Approx. August 1 through June 1)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Food Services assists the Director of Food Services in planning, organizing, and supervising the daily operation of the school nutrition program serving three school buildings within the district. This position works collaboratively with the Director to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations while providing high-quality, nutritious meals and excellent customer service to students and staff.
The Assistant Director provides leadership and operational support to kitchen personnel, assists with menu implementation, inventory management, food safety, purchasing, staff training, and administrative duties. In the absence of the Director, the Assistant Director may oversee the daily operation of the Food Services Department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Director of Food Services in managing the district's school nutrition program.
- Support daily food service operations in all three school buildings.
- Supervise and provide guidance to food service staff while promoting teamwork and professionalism.
- Assist with staff scheduling, training, orientation, and performance support.
- Monitor meal production, food quality, portion control, and presentation.
- Ensure compliance with USDA, state, and local health department regulations.
- Maintain food safety and sanitation standards in accordance with HACCP guidelines.
- Assist with inventory control, ordering, receiving, and storage of food and supplies.
- Help manage food and labor costs while minimizing waste.
- Conduct site visits to monitor kitchen operations and provide support as needed.
- Assist with menu implementation and recipe standardization.
- Support meal counting, claiming, and required recordkeeping.
- Assist with preparing reports, production records, inventories, and other required documentation.
- Work collaboratively with school administrators, office staff, custodians, vendors, and district personnel.
- Assist with special events, catering, and district functions as assigned.
- Operate food service software and point-of-sale systems.
- Maintain confidentiality of district information and student records.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Food Services.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Food Service Management, Business, Hospitality, or a related field preferred.
- Previous experience in school food service or institutional food service required.
- Supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
- Knowledge of USDA Child Nutrition Programs and school nutrition regulations preferred.
- ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification or ability to obtain certification.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and food service management software.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while functioning as part of a collaborative leadership team.

Work Schedule
- Full-time position working approximately August through June each school year.
- Typical schedule aligns with the school calendar, with occasional additional hours for staff training, inventory, special events, or other operational needs.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Director of Food Services in accordance with district policies and procedures.
