Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Administration
- Provide comprehensive leadership and direction for the School Health Services Program across the district.
- Supervise, evaluate, and support all school nursing staff, including Registered Nurses and Health Assistants.
- Plan and provide orientation for new nursing staff.
- Organize and lead regular staff meetings and professional development to ensure adherence to current nursing practices.
- Prepare the annual Board of Education School Health Office Supplies Budget.
- Prepare requisitions and allocate supplies and equipment for the School Health Services Program across all schools.
- Maintain awareness of current State and District regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure total program compliance.
- Coordinate a system to maintain accurate student health records, oversee statistical reports, and complete mandated State surveys.
- Provide consultation to nursing staff on the management of children with typical and special health care needs.
Clinical Care and Case Management
- Provide direct nursing care to students, including illness and injury assessment, medication administration, and emergency response.
- Develop and manage Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCP) and Emergency Health Care Plans for students with chronic and complex medical needs.
- Conduct mandated health screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis, etc.) and ensure immunization compliance across the student population.
- Provide nursing support for medically fragile students during transportation and field trips as required.
- Support summer school nursing coverage and nursing support for school-sponsored activities.
- Respond to crisis events and provide bereavement support when requested.
Collaboration and Communication
- Serve as the primary liaison between the School Health Program, the State and local Health Departments, and local Health Care Providers.
- Initiate regular communication and collaboration with the School Medical Advisor to maintain current Standing Orders, Medical Protocols, and communicable disease surveillance.
- Participate actively as a member of school interdisciplinary teams, including PPT, 504, Emergency Preparedness, and Tools for Schools committees.
- Interpret and effectively communicate school health policies and procedures to staff, parents, and administration.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and healthcare providers to promote student wellness, safety, and academic success.
- Provide health education and consultation to students, faculty, staff, and the broader school community.
- Communicate with physicians and families to coordinate and optimize care for individual students.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current, unencumbered license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Connecticut.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
- Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification.
- Significant clinical nursing experience, preferably in public health, pediatrics, or school nursing.
- Proven leadership or supervisory experience in a clinical or educational setting.
- Experience developing and managing individualized health care plans for students or patients with complex medical needs.
- Strong working knowledge of Connecticut school health regulations, HIPAA, and FERPA.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, parents, and district leadership.
