What are the responsibilities and job description for the Superintendent position at Watson Excavating Inc.?
About Watson Excavating Inc.
We're a third-generation earthwork contractor with deep roots and long-term partners who trust our work. As a small, hands-on team, we stay close to the field. You'll often see the owners on site running equipment and pitching in with the crew. Our projects range from commercial and residential to agricultural work, covering clearing, demolition, grading, utilities, and paving prep.
How You'll Contribute
As our first Superintendent hire, you'll keep up to 4 crews flowing across a unique mix of commercial, residential, and agricultural projects from $50K - $1M. This role blends field know-how with operational judgment, perfect for someone who can plan weekly production, coordinate crews and equipment, and step in when needed to keep jobs safe, efficient, and on track.
What You'll Get To Do
- Coordinate weekly production schedules in partnership with the office, setting realistic goals that balance crew capacity, travel time, and equipment availability across multiple small to mid-size projects including clearing, demolition, site grading, utility installation, pave prep, and topsoil placement.
- Meet with crews daily to confirm progress, identify delays early, and keep jobs on track, protecting both schedule and margin on projects where every hour counts.
- Support crews when production slips, stepping in to troubleshoot, adjust workflow, or shift manpower and equipment to recover lost ground without compromising safety or quality.
- Allocate equipment and resources to where they're needed most each day, maximizing uptime and minimizing idle costs across dispersed job sites.
- Leverage CloudRig and GPS data to track field performance, provide clear feedback, and reinforce accountability while helping refine systems for future jobs.
- Remain local, with projects typically within an hour of Turbotville, PA.
What You Bring
- You know site excavation inside and out, the sequence, the timing, the feel of the dirt, and what comes next before anyone has to say it.
- You've built your credibility by coming up through the field, learning the work firsthand, earning respect through experience, and respecting the experience already on site.
- You've led crews of 15 on multiple concurrent projects.
- Your ability to keep people, equipment, and schedules in sync solves real problems and can turn a team that answers only to us into one that sees you as the person who makes their work smoother, safer, and more successful.
- You don't hesitate to roll up your sleeves when the job calls for it, jumping in alongside the crew because you understand the work, care about the outcome, and lead by example instead of title.
