POSITION TITLE: Youth Corps Member Lead

CLASSIFICATION: Non Exempt

DEPARTMENT: Washoe Tribe Youth Corps (WTYC)

SUPERVISOR: Project Supervisor (WTYC)

GRADE: NE 8 $16.49 ($34, $24.74 ($51,459.20)

Position Summary:


Under direct supervision the Youth Corps Member Lead is responsible for carrying out the objectives to the Lead Youth Corps and members of the Washoe Tribe; assists with implementation of environmental projects and field activities; monitors condition of Tribal natural resources; and maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervise Train and Evaluate Youth Corps Members.
  • Supervise a crew of young men and women (Youth Corps Members) working on public service conservation projects in urban and rural areas. Some projects may be in remote areas.
  • Teach Youth Corps Members the importance of work productivity, teamwork, safe work habits and discipline on work projects. Responsible to follow established discipline policies and hold Youth Corps Members accountable for their behavior. Recommend disciplinary action when necessary. Evaluate Youth Corps Members' performance.
  • Instruct Youth Corps Members in the protection and conservation of natural resources utilizing nature based solutions.
  • Instruct Youth Corps Members in skills such as: construction, landscaping, erosion control and trail building and maintenance.
  • Heavy equipment operations and safety protocols and procedures.
  • Respond to emergencies such as wild land fires, floods, snow events, pest eradication and mudslides. Ability to take immediate action in life-threatening situations.
  • Teach, Direct and Counsel Youth Corps Members.
  • Develop Youth Corps Members' leadership skills. Mentor Youth Corps Members leaders.
  • Supervision of Youth Corps Members during non-work hours (night and weekend supervision, if assigned). Ensure the health and safety of all Youth Corps Members. Provide informal counseling to Youth Corps Members; may refer to formal counseling, if needed.
  • Monitor the educational attainment of Youth Corps Members engaged in non-work educational opportunities. Provide feedback and evaluation to Youth Corps Members.
  • Respond to evening and weekend emergencies.
  • Care, Maintenance and Security of Equipment and Property.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment to ensure safe operation; recommend repairs and maintenance.
  • Drive and operate vehicles and equipment, perform minor repairs and maintenance.
  • Identify, select and train Youth Corps Members drivers. Assist in their attainment of an appropriate license.
  • Recordkeeping and Personnel Administration.
  • Maintain time and leave records.
  • Develops supervisor's reports of injuries, disciplinary reports and weekly project and safety reports.
  • Document conservation awareness activities.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED and two years in a related field or education and experience.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:

  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of basic environmental terms.
  • Knowledge of the functions and structure of the Washoe Tribe.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to work under harsh weather and terrain conditions.
  • Ability to be sensitive to Tribal cultural needs of the communities in which the work is performed.
  • Fire Wildland Firefighting Training
  • Arbor (including tree climbing, rope safety, knots, limbing)
  • First-Aid and CPR/ AED Certification
  • Chain Saw Training/S212 Certification, Power Tools Safety and Operation, Heavy Equipment Safety and Operation; Chipper Safety and Operation, and Trail Construction and Maintenance.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand, walk, sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

Work is generally performed outdoors where exposure to natural weather conditions and various dusts and mists may occur. Prolonged standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground, in remote, steep, rugged, mountainous areas with unimproved dirt roads and trails. Situations where safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, protective face shields, or hardhats are needed may occur. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Travel is required for training, meetings, conferences, presentations, and other events.

The Washoe Tribe of Nevada & California requires a background check of each new hire for employment purposes. Therefore, all conditionally offered positions will be subject to the following:

  • Negative alcohol and drug screen
  • Obtain or possess a valid driver's license for either the State of Nevada or California within 30 days
  • Must be insurable under the Washoe Tribe's driving policy
  • Preference will be given to qualified Native Americans.

Salary : $40,000 - $70,000
