What are the responsibilities and job description for the REGISTERED DIETITIAN NUTRITIONIST position at Washoe County?
Under general supervision, evaluates nutritional needs of clients and families and recommends dietary regimens within assigned program(s); and performs related work as required.
This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill a current full-time vacancy in Northern Nevada Public Health. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

This position generally works a Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. schedule; however, occasional flexibility in work hours and location is required. Early evening shifts (10:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m.) and limited travel to program-designated sites may occur.
A master’s degree from an accredited college or university in dietetics or a closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
License Or Certificate
A valid driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
Licensure as a Registered Dietitian is required at the time of application and must be maintained until licensure as a Registered Dietitian in the State of Nevada is obtained.
Licensure as a Registered Dietitian in the State of Nevada is required within three months of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
State of Nevada certification as an Office Laboratory Assistant is required within six months of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
Certification as a WIC “Designated Breastfeeding Expert” may be required and if required, must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
Ideal Candidate Will
* Have experience working as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, specifically in the areas of maternal and child health, breastfeeding, and/or infant feeding.
* Have experience or familiarity with WIC and the populations WIC serves.
The Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) Supervisory Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) covers the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist position.
Selected candidates are required to meet the Health District (NNPH) immunization requirements and complete 2 TB Skin Tests at time of appointment, or provide documentation of a prior QuantiFERON test done within the last 12 months.
Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective October 1, 2026, the $40.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.
Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.

Pursuant to the Washoe County Personnel Handbook 5.160 - waiver of examination. The director of human resources may waive examination for those classes requiring specific training, education, certification, licensure, experience or when there are an insufficient number of qualified candidates.
