DSHS WSH Registered Nurse 4 - Shift Nurse Manager

Western State Hospital in Lakewood, WA, is currently seeking a Shift Nurse Manager. This position provides essential hospital wide psychiatric nurse support, patient care coordination, involving screening and community liaison functions. The Shift Nurse Manager directs hospital wide operations, including management of medical, psychiatric and facilities emergencies and onsite supervision to all nursing employees and support services during hours when other top level management are not present on grounds.

This position assists to ensure compliance with professional nursing standards, Medicare, state and federal laws and regulations. Perform key leadership functions for nursing personnel on the shifts by articulating hospital and nursing visions and provides accurate information to nursing employees on changes in the standards.

Opportunities performed onsite at this work location at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary. Free ORCA cards are available for Pierce County employees.

Some Of What You’ll Do

  • Directs hospital wide operations, including management of medical, psychiatric and facility emergencies and onsite supervision to all nursing employees and support services during house when other top level management are not present on grounds
  • Communicate with all levels of the hospital organization, particularly with the CEO, Medical Director, Center Director, Chief Nursing Officer, Interdisciplinary Team supervisors, nursing supervisors and nursing employees that assist in management and resolution of conflict, building trust and collaborative relationships and shared vision. Facilitates shared decision making. Allocates nursing resources based on patient acuity/care needs within the hospital
  • Articulates and Interprets nursing care standards and hospital policies to nursing team and multi- disciplinary team members as needed. Remains current in Nursing Practice, roles and functions of all patient care team members; Evaluates patient care delivery system for respective shift utilizing knowledge of evidence-based practice, and considering patient safety
  • Respond to and formulate complex reports. Complete employee evaluations and audits
  • Serves as a liaison person between WSH and community agencies on non-business hour and is responsible for participating and overseeing the screening of patients for involuntary admission from Western Washington Counties to include certifying bed availability using the SBC form in a timely manner
  • Ensures compliance with professional nursing standards. Medicare, state and federal laws, and regulations. Performs key leadership function for nursing in the center by articulating hospital and nursing visions, providing accurate information to nursing employees on changes in standards and hospital policies
  • Plans, organizes and directs deployment of nursing employees for safe patient care.
  • Direct, Motivate, interview, recommend for hire, provide corrective action/progressive discipline and recommend disciplinary actions
  • Investigate staff and patient complaints as assigned
  • Hold self and nursing supervisors accountable for provisions of evidence based patient care, and nursing employee personnel management process

Who Should Apply

Professionals with the following:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and four years of professional nursing experience including two years in a lead capacity over other nursing personnel.
  • A valid Washington State license to practice as a registered, professional nurse.
  • A bachelor’s degree in nursing or higher degree involving major study in nursing may be substituted for two years of non-supervisory experience.
  • One year of full-time experience teaching nursing may be substituted for one year of supervisory experience.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • A Master’s degree in Nursing is preferred
  • Competence in utilizing information technology processes and machines is desired (Computer, Telephone, Copy Machine, Microsoft Windows programs including Excel, Fax, etc.)
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and communication skills
