Social Service Specialist 5 - Nursing Facility Case Manager Supervisor

Are you the kind of leader who finds purpose in making sure vulnerable people get the care they need? DSHS's Home and Community Living Administration (HCLA) is looking for a Nursing Facility Case Manager Supervisor to lead a dedicated team in South King County. In this role, you will guide a unit of social service professionals who work every day to help older adults and people with disabilities live with independence, dignity, and choice.

Your team handles the full range of long-term care case management, from assessing client needs to authorizing services to making sure those services are delivered on time and meet state standards. The people your team serves are counting on them. Your job is to make sure your staff have the direction, tools, and support they need to do that work well.

As a Nursing Facility Case Manager Supervisor, you will coach staff through complex cases, hold the unit accountable to quality and compliance standards, and build strong working relationships with Area Agencies on Aging, community partners, and other agencies. Your work keeps the unit running and the people it serves supported.

Location: The duty station for this position can either be Renton or Federal Way.

King County employees receive 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary and are eligible to receive a free ORCA card for transportation use.

Some Of What You'll Be Doing

  • Set clear expectations for staff and follow up to make sure work meets quality and service delivery standards.
  • Hire, onboard, train, and evaluate team members in alignment with DSHS guidelines.
  • Coach and train staff on assessment methods, case management practices, and the resources available to clients.
  • Review case files to make sure services meet state and agency standards.
  • Manage unit workload, assign tasks, and set schedules to keep the unit running smoothly.
  • Take corrective or disciplinary action when needed, following agency policy.
  • Make sure staff follow state laws, rules, and Home and Community Services policies within required time frames.
  • Review electronic reports to track production and compliance, and recommend policy or process improvements.
  • Explain department programs and policies to partner agencies and community organizations.
  • Coordinate with local Area Agencies on Aging to make sure clients get the right services.
  • Enter and review data using systems including CARE, ACES, Provider One, Excel, Word, Intake, Barcode, and Stat Tracker.
  • Lead regular unit meetings and staff trainings.
  • Travel to local, regional, and statewide meetings as needed.

Who should apply? We are seeking professionals that meet the following criteria:

  • One year of experience as a Social Service Specialist 4. OR
  • Two years of experience as a Social Service Specialist 3. OR
  • Four years of experience as a Social Service Specialist 2. OR
  • A master’s degree** in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, criminal justice, or a related field AND one year of paid social service experience* equivalent to a Social Service Specialist 3 . OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, criminal justice, or a related field AND five years of paid social service experience* performing functions equivalent to a Social Service Specialist 2 . OR
  • A combination of higher education ( in social services, human services, behavioral sciences, criminal justice, or a related field) and paid social service experience* totaling at least nine years.

*NOTE: Paid Social Service experience must include assessing risk and safety to adults or children and providing direct family-centered practice services.

  • NOTE: A two year master's degree in one of the above fields that included a practicum may be substituted for one year of paid social service experience.

  • Supervision: Guides and evaluates a team of social service staff, providing clear direction, honest feedback, and consistent follow-through on performance expectations.
  • Organization: Manages competing priorities, delegates tasks across the unit, and keeps work moving forward to meet deadlines.
  • Judgment and conflict resolution: Assesses complex or urgent situations independently and knows when to bring in the right people to prevent harm or reduce risk.
  • Communication: Writes clear, professional correspondence and speaks effectively with clients, staff, partners, and the public.
  • Medical knowledge: Understands medical terms related to aging and long-term care and applies that knowledge to support sound case decisions.
  • Technology: Uses Microsoft Office programs and DSHS databases and software such as CARE, ACES, and Provider One to manage information and track work.
  • Collaboration: Builds positive working relationships with community partners, outside agencies, and internal teams to connect clients to the services they need.
  • Cultural awareness: Understands and respects the diverse backgrounds, values, and life experiences of clients and staff, and adapts communication and approach to reflect that understanding.
