The Washington County – Justice Court, Precinct One Office is seeking applicants for the position of part-time Justice Court Clerk for the Brenham, Texas office.
The Justice Court Clerk assists the Chief Court Clerk with the facilities, planning, budgeting and scheduling the Justice Court and Constables security duties (Court Bailiffs). Maintains accurate files for all civil and criminal cases, including misdemeanor and felony warrants, Inquests files, property hearings, mental detentions and emergency protection orders. Responsible for reporting requirements to the State of Texas, Office of Court Administration and the Omni Database. Manages all collection records and reports. Overall management of the Justice Court for Precinct One, Justice of the Peace.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office and data entry
- Valid Texas Driver’s License
- Must be able to pass drug test and background check.
- Notary Public

- Master Court Clerk
- Justice of the Peace Court Personnel Professional Certification Level One Court certification
- Justice of the Peace Court Clerk Certification a variety of tasks with attention detail and respectfully interact with the general public.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Justice Court Clerk must be able to perform the following essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation. The job and these duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive of the those necessary to perform this job. As an employee of Washington County, it shall be my duty to:
- Reception – the CCC is the principal receptionist for the office, not only answering the phones, but handling defendants at the lobby window. Also acts as defensive lineman to defend the Judge from audience seekers due to the illegal nature of that activity. Must have congenial and patient nature to handle the dozens of phone calls requesting the most mundane information, repetitive questions and have the knowledge to answer any questions that may arise. The Chief Court Clerk is the “face of the Court”.
- Mail Clerk – Civil & Criminal - Responsible for the receiving and recording of ALL correspondence with the court. The mail must be inspected, opened date stamped, recorded in the mail log, determine the purpose of the correspondence and proper file all items following the Courts procedures.
- Data Entry Specialist- The Chief Court Clerk is responsible for the entry of each case filed in person or through the EFILE system, including verifying the correct filing fees, in the Justice of the Peace Office whether it is Civil or Criminal, Magistration, Inquest, Property, Administrative hearings, etc. Must enter all of those documents, payments and any correspondence regarding each case.
- Warrant Administrator – The Chief Court Clerk is responsible for the issuance of all Court warrants including misdemeanor and felony warrants and maintain the records for those warrants, making sure that those warrants are issued to the proper law enforcement entity. The clerk must also make sure that all proper paperwork is filed to issue those warrants. The clerk must also send pre-warrant notices to defendants. If there is no response, then transfer these cases, and correspond with Omni base, and also, transfer these outstanding cases to the Collections Firm.
- Hot Check Coordinator – The Chief Court Clerk is responsible for the receipt and execution of hot check writers as filed with the Court. This includes the receipt of the petitions, filing and the issuance of notice to the violator to appear in Court. Maintains all records of payments and issues the proper paperwork ensuring that the merchant is issued a restitution check by the County Treasurer’s Office.
- Corresponding Secretary – Responsible for all the correspondence issued by the Court to Attorneys, Defendants or other applicants and higher courts, either by phone, email, U.S. mail or fax in reference to the cases filed in the Court, notices of hearings, trials set for bench or jury.

The part-time clerk position participates in the County retirement program but does not qualify for other benefits.
- Employment is contingent on passing post-offer, pre-employment, reasonable suspicion and/or periodic drug, criminal background investigations, and motor vehicle record reports as appropriate under policy.
