What are the responsibilities and job description for the Makerspace Aide position at Washington-Centerville Public Library?

The Washington-Centerville Public Library, a busy mid-sized suburban library serving a population of approximately 56,000 citizens in the communities of Centerville and Washington Township, is seeking a Makerspace Aide to help us fulfill our Mission and Values and demonstrate our Customer Service Philosophy. The position is scheduled for 15 hours per week in our Makerspace, aiding patrons with projects involving 3D printers, sewing machines, and other craft-related equipment.

General Responsibilities:

Locate, retrieve, restock, check-in/out all library materials in all locations; may require regular standing, bending, stooping and lifting of up to twenty five (25) pounds.
Push book trucks of up to thirty (30) pounds.
Communicate in writing, by phone, by facsimile, and in person to patrons and staff members on a professional level.
Perform clerical duties, such as writing, record keeping, alpha and numerical filing, and retrieval of information from various PC’s, automated systems and other sources; Be competent with computer office applications and Internet usage and research.
Provide advanced customer services such as patron library & maker education, and research of print and non-print materials.
Regular and predictable attendance.

Maintain a wide breadth and depth of knowledge about the DIY maker movement, the community and current events.
Maintain and clean workstations and service desks.
Perform opening and closing procedures.
Restock maker consumables and merchandising materials.
Work at the Makerspace as scheduled.

Assess current and future patron needs and work with departmental staff and leadership to fulfill these needs.
Actively promote makerspace services, programs and materials to public and staff.
Assess patron requests through reference interviewing techniques to fulfill their needs.
Handle difficult patron situations with creativity and achieve results as needed.
Provide assistance with and troubleshooting of makerspace equipment, laptops, supported software, printing services and patron personal electronic devices.
Provide outstanding, pleasant, professional customer service.

Bachelor's degree; STEAM-related field preferred.
Proficiency with PCs, electronic devices, and MS Office software.
One year library, makerspace, or technology instruction experience preferred.
Strong customer service orientation with one year of work experience serving the public.
Specialized skills or knowledge of operation and processes involved with DIY making and/or maker movement, including DIY making hardware and software such as 3D modeling and printing/fabrication, cutters, engravers, sewing machines, coding, audio/visual production, and other forms of digital creation; usage of basic hand tools.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Collaborative with demonstrated ability to contribute in a team environment, creative, with a good sense of humor.
Self motivated, organized, efficient, and productive with excellent time management skills.
Assess patron needs for research or readers advisory through application of effective reference interview techniques.
