POSITION: Part Time Kennel Tech

DEPARTMENT: Animal Control

WORK SCHEDULE: up to 28 hours per week.

STATUS: Part Time

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

Purpose of Position:

  • The purpose of the Part-Time Kennel Technician is to support Animal Control operations by ensuring the humane care, cleanliness, and daily well-being of animals housed at the animal control facility. This position is responsible for maintaining a safe, sanitary, and compassionate environment for animals while assisting Animal Control Officers and staff with routine kennel operations and basic animal care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide food to animals and appropriate snacks at the scheduled times
  • Participates in bathing of animals using the proper equipment and products
  • Assist with transport of animals to other facilities for care on occasion
  • Exercise and comfort the animals and may assist restraining pets during examinations
  • Disinfect the facility including kennels, cages, outdoor holding areas, animal meeting room, break area, restroom and ensure proper sanitation and safety standards are met
  • Provide first aid to pets in an emergency, stabilizing them until the veterinarian arrives
  • Promptly report any abnormal behavior or dietary concerns to an Officer or Supervisor
  • May perform some clerical duties as needed
  • Execute other duties as assigned

Work Schedule:

  • Weekdays, part-time vary from week to week. Standard part-time hours shall not exceed 28 hours per week. Standard hours assigned from Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Job Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to work alone with minimal supervision
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County Departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities
  • Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.
  • Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug free workplace, and personal conduct
  • Ability to provide public access to or maintain department information and records according to state requirements
  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written and/or oral instructions
  • Ability to occasionally work extended hours, weekends, and evenings
  • Ability to physically perform duties including but not limited to standing/walking for long periods, lifting animal weighing 25 to 75 pounds, carrying and pushing/pulling objects as needed
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment, occasionally under time pressure, and on several tasks at the same time.
  • Ability to perform essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of self and other individuals in the workplace.
  • Working knowledge of universal health precautions and blood borne pathogens control, and ability to apply such knowledge to protect oneself against infection
  • Ability to communicate effectively by phone and/or in person with the public
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record

Responsibility:

  • Incumbent performs standard, recurring duties with assignments guided by broad policies and/or objectives. Incumbent receives general supervision and refers to supervisor when interpretations of department policies or programs are thought necessary. Errors are primarily detected through procedural safeguards. Work errors could result in loss of time to correct error.

Personal Work Relationships:

  • Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County at minimum departments, local agencies and organizations, veterinarians, and the public for the purpose of exchanging information and ideas, rendering service, mentoring, and supervising personnel.
  • Incumbent reports directly to the Animal Control Manager.

Physical Effort and Work Environment:

  • Incumbent performs duties in an animal control facility, outdoors, involving sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying animals weighing over 50 pounds, crouching/kneeling, bending/reaching, color/depth perception, handling/grasping objects, close/far vision, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication.
  • Physical effort is frequently exerted for sustained periods, but intense physical strain is not part of normal duties. Outdoor duties involve exposure to normal hazards associated with animal control, such as animal bites, traffic, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, running up/down stairs and for long periods, carrying equipment up/down stairs, jumping, crawling/climbing, and working near chemicals, fumes, dust, odors, and dirt. Safety precautions must be taken when working with animals, including wearing protective clothing. Incumbent may be exposed to potentially irate/hostile animals and/or individuals.
  • Incumbent occasionally works extended hours, weekends, and evenings.
