CRIME ANALYST
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Performs in all steps of intelligence cycle; planning and directing, collecting information, processing and collating information, analyzing, and producing and disseminating intelligence to help attain the mission of the Sheriff’s Office. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Lieutenant.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Investigating criminal activity; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.

Ø Assist in identifying intelligence needs of law enforcement partners.
Ø Collect, organize and analyze large data sets.
Ø Utilize intelligence specific software program.
Ø Determine suspicious or potential criminal activity, associations and trends.
Ø Identify leads for follow up investigations.
Ø Identify and develop undocumented areas of investigations and provide leads for follow up criminal investigations for law enforcement agencies and initiatives.
Ø Conduct research on criminal investigations; assist in identification of criminal trends; conduct tactical, operational and strategic intelligence analysis. Conduct Threat and Risk Vulnerability Assessment.
Ø Responsible for research and understanding trends and threats related to specific drugs and criminal organizations within the region.
Ø Develop intelligence products that serve as a resource to law enforcement and public health entities within the region. Prepare digital charges, graphs, tables, maps and other visual aids for case support and intelligence briefings.
Ø Develop and prepare comprehensive reports and bulletins for use by law enforcement agency personnel in planning the deployment of resources for the prevention and suppression of criminal activities.
Ø Provide timely and actionable information and intelligence regarding past, present, and future crimes and crime trends.
Ø Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings; working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Sheriff's Office; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports. Ability to research a voluminous amount of data in order to find information on individuals utilizing very little previous information on subject. Ability to learn complex software and databases that support Data-Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety (DDACTS). Excellent skills in internet navigation and open source intelligence. Ability to prepare graphs, charts, tables, maps and other illustrative devices from collected data for visual presentations. Proficiency and demonstrated skills in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, current and popular analytic software, crime analysis software and presentation techniques.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Experience in law enforcement and training in crime analysis preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job requires sitting for extended periods of time, typing, filing and periodic lifting of objects less than 20 pounds.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must be able to pass background check and obtain security clearance with departments providing information. Ability to gain cooperation and work in conjunction with personnel from allied agencies; training or coursework in intelligence analysis, knowledge of federal regulations regarding the collection and dissemination of intelligence information. Knowledge of the intelligence cycle and criminal investigations, collection, analyzing and dissemination of criminal intelligence information.
