What are the responsibilities and job description for the Industrial Painter and Body Technician position at Ward Apparatus, LLC?
Our Paint Team is responsible for both surface preparation and finish work on custom-built emergency vehicles. This role combines industrial spray painting with hands-on body repair and sanding to ensure vehicles meet durability, quality, and appearance standards.
This is a manufacturing-based role, not a retail collision shop. Work is performed in a controlled shop environment on emergency vehicles at various stages of build.
What You’ll Do
- Prepare vehicle surfaces through sanding, grinding, or blasting
- Perform body repair work including filling, shaping, and smoothing dents or imperfections
- Mask and protect areas not to be painted
- Mix and apply primers, base coats, and clear coats using spray equipment
- Match paint colors and finishes per specifications
- Inspect, buff, polish, and touch up painted surfaces as needed
- Work with assembly and fabrication teams to ensure paint readiness
- Assist with setup and operation of paint booths and related equipment
- Follow all safety procedures, including proper PPE and ventilation protocols
- Manage multiple vehicles or projects simultaneously while maintaining quality
What We’re Looking For
- Experience in industrial painting, automotive paint & body, heavy equipment, or manufacturing environments
- Strong skills in surface preparation, sanding, and body repair
- Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, and spray equipment
- Attention to detail and pride in finished work
- Team-oriented, dependable, and safety-focused
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- 2 recent years of experience in paint & body, industrial coatings, or a similar hands-on role
OR
- Technical training in auto body repair, coatings, or industrial painting with hands-on experience
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on feet for the duration of the shift
- Ability to work from ladders or platforms when required
- Effective communication skills
Preferred (Not Required)
- Experience with computerized paint-matching systems
- Ability to blend and match paint for repairs
- Familiarity with spray booth equipment and maintenance
- ASE or I-CAR certification
