Position Summary
The Director of Fund Accounting is responsible for providing leadership and oversight of the Fund Accounting function for the various Walton Global Holdings departments and divisions, including internal & external reporting, technical accounting, and implementation & maintenance of internal controls. They are responsible for ensuring all accounting tasks follow financial regulations and reporting requirements to keep the company in compliance.
This candidate will be managing the Fund Accounting team, focusing on metrics and deliverables, and creating efficiencies and improvements along the way. This candidate will be comfortable participating in meetings with senior executives and providing advice, recommendations, or caution. The Director of Fund Accounting will also serve as a trusted member of the management team, participating and providing value during planning discussions.
This position requires you work in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Manage and lead Accounting Managers to oversee Fund Accounting functions
- Oversight and training of the Accounting Managers, Senior Accountants, and General Accountants working on your team, locally and internationally
- Manage the preparation and review of various annual financial statements, where statements are presented in GAAP, IFRS, and ASPE
- Review and assist as necessary with the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements for real estate funds for internal and external users
- Responsible for technical accounting compliance, including consultation with external auditors on complex accounting and tax issues as necessary
- Collaborate and provide financial accounting guidance to other groups in Finance & Accounting and throughout the organization as needed
- Advise on technical accounting matters for new transactions
- Review new accounting pronouncements and implement new accounting policies and disclosures as needed
- Review and understanding of fund and asset level agreements, including the fund Private Placement Memorandum and Purchase and Sale Agreement(s)
- Oversee cash balances and management of sources and uses at the fund levels
- Review of and input to annual budgeting and forecasting
- Set up and maintenance of accounting records and procedures for real estate acquisitions. Includes complex tax and legal structuring
- Work with a Valuation Committee and oversee finance team to determine fair market value of various properties on an annual basis
- Coordinate and manage various external audits
- Maintain working relationships with external auditors
- Oversee the annual audit of the various funds’ financial statements with the external auditor, including audit testing and review and preparation of the annual audited financial statements
- Serve as the lead on all fund accounts, taking responsibility for planning, execution, and final deliverable products
- Demonstrate initiative, vision, resourcefulness, creativity, and independent thinking
- Maintain general knowledge of accounting, financial statements, internal controls, and professional standards (GAAP, GAAS, etc.)
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- 8 years of experience in assurance public accounting and corporate accounting, preferably within real estate, including financial statement review and audit preparation
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance
- Active Certified Public Accountant (“CPA”) license required
- Management experience is required
- Expert knowledge of GAAP and experienced in organizational structuring
- Strong knowledge of contracts
- Ability to manage competing priorities and multiple audits at once
- Ability to work well independently and with a team
- Ability to view processes critically and automate manual pieces is key
- Excellent analytical, technical accounting, and technology skills
- Requires excellent written and oral communication skills
- Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
- Solid organizational skills with a demonstrated ability to multi-task
- Proven competence with MS Office and research software
