What are the responsibilities and job description for the CNC Designer / Operator (Custom Cabinetry) position at Walter's Custom Cabinetry?
We are a high-end custom cabinet shop seeking a skilled CNC Designer / Operator who can take cabinetry projects from design intent to CNC output. This role requires comprehensive understanding of cabinet construction and knowledge of AutoCAD, Vectric Aspire.
Responsibilities
- Translate cabinet shop drawings and specs into CNC-ready toolpaths and cut files
- Build and maintain clean, accurate CAD/CAM workflows using AutoCAD, Vectric Aspire
- Develop cabinet part layouts (nested sheets), labeling strategies, and machining operations for efficient production
- Design and fabricate custom items including MDF doors, moldings, specialty panels, custom pulls, high-end hinge drilling (e.g., Tectus, Soss, etc), and other non-standard cabinet parts
- Coordinate with the shop lead/project manager on design details, material choices, hardware, tolerances, and sequencing
- Maintain inventory of tooling and cutters
- Set up and operate CNC equipment: tooling, workholding/vacuum, calibration, feeds/speeds, and verification using an Andersen Selexx 510 CNC.
- Perform test cuts, troubleshoot issues, and refine programs for quality and cycle-time improvements
- Maintain an organized digital library of templates, cabinet standards, tooling, and post-processors
- Support continuous improvement in process, safety, and quality control
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in custom cabinet design (face frame and/or frameless), including:
- joinery, reveal logic, scribe fillers, toe kicks, stretchers, backs, and paneling
- door/drawer standards, clearances, and hardware integration (Blum/Salice/Hettich, etc.)
- material behavior and best practices (plywood, MDF, veneer, solid wood)
- Strong proficiency with:
- AutoCAD (production drawings, 2D part generation, clean layers/blocks, dimensioning)
- Vectric Aspire (toolpaths, pocket/profile/drill, moulding toolpath, nesting strategies, simulation, file output)
- Note - we are open to other solutions, for example, MasterCam or AlphaCam, but don't currently have this software in-house.
- CNC operation competence: tool selection, maintenance awareness, and safe machine practices
- High attention to detail—able to hit tight tolerances and deliver consistent fit/finish
- Ability to read shop drawings, interpret specifications, and solve problems independently
