Primary Purpose:

Plan and provide speech-language pathology services to students with Articulation, Fluency, Voice, or Language disorders. Provide therapeutic intervention to eliminate or reduce difficulties or impairments that interfere with their students’ ability to derive full benefit from the educational program.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

One of the below requirements must be met:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 24 hours in speech pathology and/or audiology, with at  least 18 hours in speech pathology; 25 hours of clinical observation; 25 hours of  clinical assisting experience and a supervising licensed speech-language  

         pathologist; 

  • Valid Texas license as a Speech Language Pathologist – Assistant 

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Implement speech services for students who meet the criteria for speech services. 
  • Ability to interpret and implement students’ speech goals 
  • Ability to bill Medicaid tickets under supervision SLP
  • Ability to collect measurable data on IEP goals
  • Ability to instruct and manage student behavior 
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills 

 

Experience:

Experience in a school setting is preferred, but not required 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Therapy

  • Plan and provide appropriate individual and group therapy to students consistent with the speech and language goals contained in Individual Education Plans (IEP). 
  • Assist speech pathologists with collection of data to plan for appropriate IEP goals and report progress on progress reports. 

Student Management

  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.
  • Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.

Program Management

  • Collaborate with a speech pathologist’s schedule to assure that a minimum of two hours  per week of supervision is completed.
  • Stay current and up to date on CEU hours for license.
  • Administered routine tests on which appropriate training have been conducted under the  direct supervision of a speech pathologist. 

Consultation

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and implement classroom activities to improve communication skills of students.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents regarding the  progress on IEP goals. 

 

Administration 

  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy. 
  • Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  •  Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.

  • Attendance – attend work on a consistent basis, taking care to consider the use and number of absences in accordance with policy so that the organization is not negatively impacted.

 Working Conditions: 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: 

Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular district wide travel to multiple work locations as assigned; moderate lifting and carrying. May be required to lift and transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities. 

 

*Supervisors of licensed Speech-Language Assistants must be licensed by TDLR in Texas and maintain an ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP).
