Church Custodian

Job Overview

We are seeking a dependable, responsible and skilled Church Custodian to maintain the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of our church facilities. This vital role ensures that the environment remains welcoming, sanitary, and well-maintained for congregation members, staff, and visitors alike. The Custodian will perform a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks, along with basic handyman duties contributing to a positive and respectful atmosphere.

The ideal candidate will have 2 years experience, take pride in their work, be able to work independently, and have experience with basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry and general repairs. Duties

• Perform thorough cleaning of all church areas, including sanctuary, classrooms, offices, kitchen (including the stove) restrooms, hallways, and common spaces using appropriate cleaning agents and equipment
• Operate commercial cleaning tools such as floor buffers, vacuums, and carpet cleaners to ensure floors and surfaces are spotless and well-maintained
• Handle chemical agents safely following established safety protocols and handling safety procedures for all cleaning supplies and equipment
• Conduct heavy lifting tasks in accordance with safe lifting practices to move furniture, supplies, or equipment as needed
• Maintain sanitation standards by regularly disinfecting high-touch surfaces and ensuring restrooms are clean and stocked with necessary supplies
• Perform minor facilities maintenance tasks such as painting, light repairs, or replacing fixtures to keep the premises in excellent condition
• Follow safety protocols diligently during all custodial activities to prevent accidents and ensure a safe environment for everyone
• Assist with special cleaning projects or events setup (ex: special week-end activities and funerals) and teardown as required by church schedules or activities
• Empty Trash and recyling, clean and maintain kitchen and fellowship hall areas
• Clean and dust pulpit and sanctuary (pews) funiture, clean windows, chandeliers, glass, mirrors, doors and other surfaces as needed

Skills

• Proven experience in custodial work or janitorial services within a commercial or residential setting
• Strong knowledge of cleaning techniques, sanitation standards, and chemical handling safety procedures
• Familiarity with custodial equipment including floor buffers, vacuums, mops, and other cleaning tools -
• Ability to perform manual handling tasks involving heavy lifting while adhering to safe lifting practices
• Excellent attention to detail to ensure thorough cleanliness and maintenance of all areas
• Respectful and Customer service skills to interact professionally with staff and congregation members
• Basic facilities maintenance skills such as painting or minor repairs are a plus
• Ability to follow safety protocols consistently and work independently with minimal supervision
• FIRE SAFETY CREDENTIALS ARE A BIG PLUS! FDNY D-10 CERTIFICATE OF FITNESS
• Clean and restore the facility after Sunday Service, meetings, weddings, funerals and other events.
• Identify and report major electrical and plumbing problems and maintenance and safety concerns to the Trustees

Pay: $17.00 - $24.00 per hour
