Summary of position: To provide group and individual music education to students in kindergarten through eighth grade with social, emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges, as well as supporting music-related schoolwide events and activities. To create and maintain a structured, consistent, nurturing class environment.
Education and Licensure
Required: Bachelor’s degree in related field
Preferred: MA teaching license in music education or related field
Experience
Required: Background in music education
Preferred: Experience working with children with complex social, emotional, and
behavioral challenges
Abilities
Required mental abilities: Ability to be flexible and work collaboratively. Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly and safely. Ability to work in a stressful and fast paced environment. Must understand child development and the impact of emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities. Must understand issues of confidentiality. Must be receptive to supervision and professional development.
Required physical abilities: Ability to work and stand for extended period of time. Job may require bending, stooping, stretching, and lifting. Job requires the ability to perform therapeutic physical intervention as needed.
Essential functions:
Work as a part of a multidisciplinary team to further the emotional, behavioral, and educational development of children. 2. Maintain a structured, therapeutic classroom atmosphere that promotes hands-on engaging teaching methods; effectively manage the behavior of students in small and large groups as per our behavior support system.
Implement treatment protocol and appropriate therapeutic strategies established in children’s treatment plans, IEPs, and individual support plans.
Apply Walker’s model of childcare, including Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI), which requires physical restraint when necessary, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, trauma-informed care, cooperative group games, and behavioral support. 4.
Meet children’s physical needs and provide a safe and therapeutic environment for children
Participate fully in the administrative functions of teaching and childcare, including attending and participating in required meetings, completing assigned report writing tasks in a timely manner, and actively communicating with students’ multidisciplinary teams and families.
Actively participate in supervision and professional development opportunities offered at Walker. 7.
Follow and implement all Walker policies and procedures.
Align units, lessons, and objectives with school and state standards.
Prepare sequential units of study as well as daily lessons and materials necessary for instruction, setting clear and reasonable standards and expectations for students.
Plan and implement weekly music lessons for all classrooms and a weekly music elective.
Provide individual music lessons for students who are interested and coordinate the weekly lesson schedule.
Plan and host Walker’s annual Talent Show, alongside the Assistant Principal
All other duties, as assigned.
