People & Paws Pharmacy is a locally owned, independent compounding pharmacy serving patients, healthcare providers, clinics, and veterinary practices throughout Hawaiʻi. We specialize in personalized medicine and precision compounding for both people and animals.


As we continue to expand statewide, we are seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Pharmacist to join our Honolulu Central Fill Compounding Pharmacy.


Compounding experience is preferred, but not required. We are willing to train the right pharmacist. This is an excellent opportunity for a pharmacist who wants to move beyond traditional retail practice and develop specialized skills in sterile, non-sterile, hazardous, and chemotherapy compounding.


Our Compounding Capabilities


Our Honolulu central fill operation supports patients and providers throughout Hawaiʻi and includes:


• USP <795> non-sterile compounding

• USP <797> sterile compounding

• USP <800> sterile hazardous compounding

• USP <800> non-sterile hazardous compounding

• Chemotherapy compounding

• Human and veterinary customized medications


Position Overview


The pharmacist will work alongside our compounding team to review, verify, and oversee customized medications produced through our central fill operation.


For pharmacists who are new to compounding, People & Paws will provide training in our compounding procedures, workflows, documentation, quality systems, and applicable USP standards.


We are looking for someone who is dependable, eager to learn, attentive to detail, and committed to maintaining a high standard of patient safety and quality.


Responsibilities


• Review and verify prescriptions for accuracy, appropriateness, and completeness

• Oversee sterile and non-sterile compounded preparations

• Oversee sterile and non-sterile hazardous drug preparations

• Participate in and oversee chemotherapy compounding

• Perform final verification and release of compounded preparations

• Supervise and support compounding pharmacy technicians

• Follow established procedures related to USP <795>, <797>, and <800>

• Ensure appropriate handling, preparation, storage, labeling, dispensing, and disposal of hazardous medications

• Support aseptic technique, garbing, cleaning, environmental monitoring, competency assessment, and documentation

• Verify calculations, formulations, labeling, and beyond-use dating

• Communicate with prescribers regarding customized formulations and prescription questions

• Maintain accurate compounding and quality assurance records

• Support inventory management of APIs, hazardous drugs, supplies, and finished preparations

• Participate in ongoing training and continuous quality improvement

• Help maintain safe, accurate, and efficient central fill workflows


Areas of Compounding


Our pharmacy prepares customized medications across a variety of areas, including:


• Sterile preparations and injectables

• Sterile hazardous preparations

• Non-sterile hazardous preparations

• Chemotherapy preparations

• Hormone replacement therapies

• Metabolic and wellness therapies

• Dermatology and topical preparations

• Capsules, troches, creams, gels, and other customized dosage forms

• Veterinary medications

• Other patient-specific formulations prescribed by healthcare providers throughout Hawaiʻi


Qualifications


Required:


• PharmD or BS in Pharmacy from an accredited school of pharmacy

• Active Hawaiʻi Pharmacist License or ability to obtain Hawaiʻi licensure

• Strong attention to detail

• Commitment to patient and employee safety

• Willingness to learn specialized compounding procedures

• Ability to follow detailed procedures and documentation requirements

• Strong communication and organizational skills

• Dependable, professional, and team-oriented


Compounding experience is NOT required.


Preferred Experience


The following experience is beneficial, but we encourage qualified pharmacists without compounding experience to apply:


• Sterile or non-sterile compounding

• Hazardous drug compounding

• Chemotherapy compounding

• Familiarity with USP <795>, <797>, or <800>

• Aseptic technique

• Quality assurance or environmental monitoring

• Supervising or training pharmacy technicians


We are willing to train a motivated pharmacist who is interested in developing these skills.

Schedule


Full-time position. Specific hours and schedule will be discussed during the interview process.


Compensation


Competitive compensation based on experience. Previous compounding experience is valued but is not required for consideration. Additional compensation may be available for candidates who take on greater clinical, operational, or leadership responsibilities.
