Essential Job Responsibilities Include
- Supporting a Senior Editor acquiring in business, economics, technology, and personal development, and an Editor acquiring in history, current affairs, big idea books, and general nonfiction.
- Supporting select other Trade Editorial Department needs, as they arise.
- Reading and responding quickly to submissions of various genres.
- Preparing manuscripts for copyediting and production; managing manuscripts in all stages of production; working with editors, agents, and authors to meet deadlines.
- Drafting copy for catalogs, book jackets, and other materials.
- Professionally interacting with authors, agents, production, marketing, publicity, and sales staff to relay messages; following up on requests and deadlines; and anticipating when to act proactively on messages.
- Administrative management: organizing and maintaining files; tracking manuscripts; copying, printing, and emailing; tracking and processing payments.
- Managing text and photo permissions with authors and the contracts department.
- On proven ability, some editing of manuscripts and contributing to overall publishing strategy of individual titles.

- Bachelor's Degree.
- Must be able to work from Norton's New York City headquarters. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule of 3 days in the office and 2 days remote.

- Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to interact with confidence, warmth, and respect with authors, agents, and employees at all levels. This candidate should be sensitive to language and be able to thoughtfully evaluate voice and argument.
- Strong attention to detail, ensuring that all tasks are handled with accuracy.
- Proactivity, flexibility, and adaptability. This candidate must be able to anticipate needs, provide timely, relevant assistance, and adjust to changes with a "can-do" attitude. Must be self-directed and independent.
- Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively across departments, activities, and projects.
- Mastery of email and calendar management tools, specifically Outlook; proficiency in Word and Excel.
- Employment eligibility to work with W. W. Norton & Company in the U.S.
- Sharp, curious mind, expanded by breadth and depth of reading in contemporary nonfiction, particularly in business, history, technology, practical nonfiction, politics, current affairs, and international affairs. Applicant should regularly follow multiple reputable sources for news and information.
- Annual compensation for this position is $48,000. All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location and like considerations.
