Summary: This role of an Integration / Interoperability Solution Architect is centered on designing and governing how healthcare systems exchange data across complex ecosystems such as payers, providers, EHR platforms, and external partners. The architect is responsible for creating end-to-end integration solutions that enable seamless, secure, and standards-based data flow using healthcare interoperability frameworks like HL7 (v2 messaging), FHIR (modern REST APIs), X12 (insurance transactions such as 278 for utilization management and 834 for enrollment), CCDA, and EDI. A key part of the role is hands-on work with integration engines like Mirth Connect / NextGen Mirth Connect, where the architect ensures that interfaces are correctly configured, data transformations are accurate, and communication between systems is reliable and scalable. They also design API-based architectures, define integration patterns, create system and data flow diagrams, and produce technical documentation that guides implementation teams.
In addition to architecture and design, the role carries strong production ownership and stakeholder collaboration responsibilities. The architect supports live environments by troubleshooting interface failures, monitoring integration performance, and resolving complex interoperability issues that impact healthcare workflows such as eligibility, enrollment, and prior authorization. They act as a bridge between business stakeholders and technical teams, translating healthcare requirements into scalable technical solutions while guiding developers, analysts, and QA teams through implementation. The role also involves participation in Agile processes, architectural governance, and continuous improvement of integration platforms. Increasingly, there is a focus on modernizing healthcare integrations using Azure cloud services and AI/GenAI tools, enabling smarter automation, improved data processing, and more efficient interoperability across healthcare networks.
