What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at VP Supply Corp?

Description

Company Overview:

VP Supply is a leading value-added wholesale distribution company committed to facilitating pain-free construction and renovation. With 20 locations across multiple states and over 400 employees, we provide the products, expertise, and service that contractors and builders rely on to keep projects moving.

As a growth-oriented, 60-year-old, family-owned business, we combine long-term relationships and strong values with the ambition and agility to scale. Our culture supports people who are driven to grow professionally while valuing balance, community, and meaningful work.

Position Summary

The Controller will serve as both a hands-on leader and strategic architect of VP Supply’s accounting function—owning the integrity of the general ledger, strengthening controls, and driving the continued evolution of systems and processes to support a growing, multi-entity distribution business.

This role is ideal for a technically strong, process-minded accounting professional who is ready to build structure, elevate team performance, and improve the consistency and scalability of financial reporting. The Controller will manage and develop the accounting team while remaining actively engaged in key accounting activities as systems and capabilities continue to mature—striking the right balance between hands-on execution and team leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Core Accounting Operations: Oversee general ledger, inventory, and cost accounting activities—including receivables, payables, accruals, inventory valuation, vendor rebates, and margin reporting—to ensure accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant financial results.

Champion Audit & Lender Readiness: Lead the annual audit and maintain strong relationships with auditors, tax advisors, and lenders. Ensure compliance with loan covenants and reporting requirements through disciplined controls and thorough documentation.

Develop and Maintain Dynamic Cash Flow Projections: Oversee cash flow planning and forecasting that reflect working capital dynamics and lender reporting needs. Partner with the CFO to optimize liquidity and ensure dependable projections that support daily operations and long-term objectives.

Collaborate Across Departments: Work closely with operations, purchasing, sales, and senior leadership to align accounting processes with business needs. Serve as a trusted partner and internal resource, providing timely and accurate financial information that supports operational decision-making and business success.

Drive Continuous Process Improvement: Continuously assess and enhance accounting processes, systems, and reporting workflows to improve efficiency, accuracy, and scalability. Use technology and automation to streamline recurring tasks and increase visibility across departments.

Lead Post-Acquisition Integration: Serve as the accounting lead for newly acquired businesses—aligning financial policies, systems, and reporting while ensuring smooth transitions and promoting a unified culture across entities.

Develop & Elevate the Accounting Team: Mentor and develop a 10 person team, fostering capability, accountability, and collaboration. Promote a culture of service, transparency, and continuous improvement grounded in integrity and professionalism.

Exemplify Leadership & Professional Maturity: Operate with transparency, integrity, and steady judgment. Balance hands-on involvement with strategic oversight, demonstrating composure and professionalism in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial setting.

Strengthen Governance & Controls: Enhance internal control frameworks, accounting policies, and documentation practices that balance rigor with operational practicality. Safeguard the integrity of financial data across all branches and business units.

Oversee Insurance Programs: Manage corporate insurance programs in collaboration with external brokers and internal stakeholders. Ensure coverage adequacy, policy compliance, and accurate documentation across all entities

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA preferred.
  • 10 years of progressive accounting experience with full ownership of the general ledger and GAAP-compliant financial reporting.
  • Experience managing accounting operations in an audited and/or lender-backed organization.
  • Strong understanding of inventory, cost accounting, and rebate recognition principles within an inventory-based or distribution environment.
  • Proven success leading process improvement, automation, or system modernization initiatives
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally, develop people, and drive accountability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in distribution or manufacturing.
  • Experience scaling accounting teams and systems during periods of growth or integration.
  • Proven ability to foster a high-performance, service-oriented culture
