Overview
Volunteer Power is seeking a qualified Lineman to safely construct, maintain, and repair all components of the electric distribution system. This position plays a critical role in delivering reliable electric service to our members while upholding the cooperative’s commitment to safety, professionalism, and customer service.
Essential Functions
- Construct, maintain, operate, and repair all aspects of the electric distribution system and substations in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and safety procedures, including participation in job briefings.
- Follow all safety guidelines and procedures, properly wear and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE), and make safety the highest priority at all times.
- Perform overhead line work including stringing wire; climbing poles; working from bucket trucks; setting poles and anchors; and installing transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, and insulators.
- Install, maintain, and repair underground distribution systems including duct systems, vaults, cables, pad‑mounted transformers, switches, switchgear, and related components.
- Locate and troubleshoot issues in primary and secondary systems; replace fuses; and clear faulted circuits and systems.
- Work with energized high‑voltage systems in accordance with established safety practices.
- Respond to emergency outages and be available for off‑duty or on‑call work as needed to restore service or connect members.
- Maintain accurate inventories of materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Connect and disconnect member electric services.
- Communicate professionally with members regarding electric service issues, tree trimming, and other service‑related concerns.
- Perform miscellaneous work on utility facilities, buildings, and equipment as assigned.
- Attend required training related to line safety, line construction, vehicle operation, meter testing, and other job‑related topics.
- May occasionally provide direction or oversight to other Linemen, Apprentices, Groundmen, or laborers at job sites.
Experience, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of approved methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in electric utility line construction and maintenance.
- Thorough understanding of hazards associated with electrical utility line work.
- Ability to learn, apply, and retain technical trade knowledge and safely operate line equipment.
- Ability to remain calm, think clearly, and act quickly during emergency situations.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with members, coworkers, and the general public.
- Willingness and ability to comply with OSHA, TOSHA, and Volunteer Power safety policies and procedures.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team and maintain positive working relationships.
- Demonstrates integrity, honesty, dependability, professionalism, and respect in all interactions.
- Ability to maintain composure during difficult situations and resolve issues while supporting Volunteer Power’s goals and objectives.
- Commitment to excellent member service and to promoting public understanding of the cooperative’s mission.
- Willingness to adapt to changing work schedules, assignments, and operational needs.
Physical Requirements, Licenses and Certifications
- Journeyman Lineman Certification
- Must be in good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform heavy manual labor related to line construction, including climbing poles and working from bucket trucks.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to safely apply first aid procedures.
- Ability to maintain focus and mental concentration when working with high‑voltage equipment.
- Ability to consistently follow safe and efficient work practices.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with a safe driving record required. Maintaining the CDL is a condition of employment.
