Role Description
VMC LLC is seeking a Systems Engineer to support the production, integration, and testing of FAA Air Traffic Control (ATC) systems. This is an on-site position based in Columbia, MD, working directly on Voice Communications Systems (VCS) and related ATC infrastructure. You will perform hands-on systems configuration, software deployment, and acceptance testing in both lab and production environments, contributing to mission-critical systems that support the National Airspace System.
Key Responsibilities
System Integration & Configuration
- Configure and set up systems hardware and software to support VCS production activities
- Deploy software builds and configuration baselines for lab and operational environments
- Configure network parameters, system settings, and environment variables across test and production platforms
- Support software integration across multiple subsystems and environments
Testing & Acceptance
- Support System Integration Testing (SIT), Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
- Develop and execute test procedures in accordance with program requirements
- Troubleshoot integration issues, document root cause findings, and track resolutions to closure
Engineering Reviews & Coordination
- Prepare materials for and participate in formal engineering reviews including Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR), and Test Readiness Review (TRR)
- Coordinate engineering activities across teams and disciplines
- Identify, document, and track technical risks; prepare risk reports for program leadership
- Produce clear, concise technical documentation throughout the program lifecycle
Required Experience and Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (civil, electrical, electronic, chemical, industrial, mechanical, aeronautical, or computer) OR Master's Degree in related field may be substituted for Bachelor's degree and 3 years' experience OR PhD in related field may be substituted for Bachelor's degree and 7 years' experience.
- 4–7 years of experience in systems integration, test engineering, or related technical roles
- Familiarity with formal engineering review processes (PDR, CDR, TRR) or equivalent program lifecycle frameworks
- Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, interface control documents (ICDs), and system requirements
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills; ability to document and communicate technical findings clearly
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on U.S. Government programs, FAA systems, or DoD/aviation technical environments
- Direct experience with FAA ATC systems, Voice Communications Systems (VCS), or NextGen programs
- Hands-on experience with network configuration (TCP/IP, routing, switching) in an operational or lab environment
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, software configuration management, or deployment automation
- Familiarity with FAT/SAT/SIT processes in a government program context
- Active or current eligibility for a U.S. Government security clearance (Public Trust or higher)
