The organization operates within a fast-paced construction and field services environment delivering installation, maintenance, commissioning, and warranty support in a growing renewable energy sector.

Position Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Controller to take full ownership of the company’s accounting and financial operations. This is a builder-style role focused on establishing structure, accuracy, and discipline within the finance function.

The Controller will be responsible for strengthening financial reporting, implementing compliant accounting practices, and developing scalable processes and internal controls to support continued growth. This position reports directly to ownership and serves as the primary financial leader within the organization.

This role is best suited for an accounting professional who is comfortable in a dynamic, field-based construction and service environment, communicates effectively across all levels of the organization, and enjoys building systems from the ground up.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesFinancial Operations

• Own the full accounting cycle including general ledger, month-end and year-end close, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
• Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, and vendor relationships while enforcing disciplined billing and collection practices
• Oversee job costing and project accounting for installation and maintenance work, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor cost tracking against budgets
• Manage cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, and working capital needs supporting payroll, purchasing, and project execution
• Coordinate payroll processing, contractor payments, and annual 1099 reporting
• Track and account for incentive-based revenue streams including renewable energy credits, rebates, and related receivables across multiple states

Compliance

• Establish GAAP-aligned accounting practices for a privately held company and maintain audit-ready financial records
• Ensure timely filing of multi-state sales and use tax, registrations, and annual filings
• Support federal and state tax filings by coordinating with external CPA firms and providing complete reconciled schedules
• Maintain compliance documentation including insurance certificates, bonding requirements, licensing, and contract documentation (e.g., lien waivers)
• Monitor regulatory changes impacting construction and solar service providers and update accounting practices as needed

Process, Systems & Controls

• Develop and implement standard operating procedures across AP, AR, payroll coordination, purchasing approvals, expense reimbursement, and month-end close
• Design and enforce internal controls including segregation of duties, approval thresholds, and documentation standards
• Evaluate and improve accounting systems, including cleanup of historical records and chart of accounts restructuring
• Build management reporting that provides visibility into profitability by service line, project, and customer segment
• Partner with operations and field leadership to support pricing, purchasing, and scheduling decisions
• Other duties as assigned

QualificationsRequired

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 4 years of progressive accounting experience including ownership of month-end close and financial reporting
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and multi-state sales and use tax compliance
• Demonstrated experience improving accounting processes, internal controls, or financial systems
• Proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks or similar) and advanced Excel skills
• Ability to work on-site in Neptune, NJ

Preferred

• Strongly preferred: Construction, contracting, field services, or project-based accounting experience
• Experience with job costing and project financial tracking in a construction environment
• Familiarity with percentage-of-completion or milestone-based revenue recognition
• Exposure to renewable energy, utility billing, or incentive/rebate programs (SREC experience a plus)
• CPA, CMA, or similar certification (active or in progress preferred)

Work Environment

This role is based in a combined office and operational facility that includes active field services coordination, warehouse space, and crew staging areas. The environment is fast-paced, direct, and operationally driven.

The Controller will interact daily with field teams, project staff, and ownership and should be comfortable communicating in clear, practical terms across both office and field environments.

The role is primarily desk-based but may require occasional presence in warehouse or operational areas with moderate noise levels. Reasonable accommodations will be provided as needed.

Compensation: $110,000-$130,000

Pay: $110,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
