What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Viridian Staffing?
Viridian Staffing’s Client is seeking an experienced accounting and financial professional to become their next Controller for a retail-focused, highly regulated operation located approximately 30 minutes east of the Providence, Rhode Island, area in Massachusetts.
Founded in 2013, Viridian Staffing (www.viridianstaffing.com) has led the way as the Original staffing, recruiting, and HR consulting firm solely dedicated to organizations in and supporting the commercial, medical, and industrial cannabis / hemp industry.
As the Controller, you will step into a highly visible role within a lean, well-run organization, partnering directly with executive leadership while owning the accounting function. This is an opportunity for someone who thrives in a hands-on environment and enjoys balancing strategic oversight with day-to-day execution. You will lead the monthly close process, maintain the general ledger, and oversee financial reporting, while also playing a critical role in cash flow forecasting, treasury management, and operational accounting.
In this role, you will work closely with leadership to ensure strong financial discipline as the organization continues to grow. Responsibilities include managing accounts payable processes, supporting vendor and procurement-related financial activities, performing sales-to-cash reconciliations, and overseeing compliance with applicable tax requirements, including sales and excise taxes. You will also partner with external firms on annual tax filings and audits, while continuing to build and improve internal processes.
Given the nature of the business, you will partner cross-functionally with operations and inventory teams to support retail and inventory-related accounting processes. You will help ensure accurate tracking across systems, maintain financial integrity, and identify opportunities to improve efficiency across the accounting function. The organization operates with a lean team structure, so strong communication, accountability, and the ability to operate independently are critical.
You bring a strong foundation in general ledger accounting and have experience owning or leading the financial close process. You also have hands-on experience with cash flow forecasting and treasury management and are comfortable working in a small, fast-moving environment where priorities can shift. Experience with QuickBooks, ERP systems, and advanced Excel skills is required.
You bring experience working within a retail cannabis or similarly complex, highly regulated retail environment and understand compliance-driven accounting practices, including tax considerations and operational nuances specific to regulated industries.
This opportunity is well suited for someone currently operating as an Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, or Controller who is looking to step into a broader leadership role within a growing organization. You enjoy being both strategic and hands-on, and you take pride in building and maintaining strong financial operations.
Work Environment: Hybrid – On-site at least 3 days per week
Compensation: $90,000 – $100,000 per year
If you are a positive, strategic accounting professional with a sense of urgency who enjoys solving complex challenges and being part of a growing organization, we encourage you to apply.
