Director of Engineering – Utility-Scale Renewables
Location: North Carolina (Hybrid)
Viridan Group is partnering with an established renewable energy company seeking a Director of Engineering to lead mid-to-late-stage engineering activities across the development, design, and construction of utility-scale energy projects.
This individual will oversee internal engineering resources and external consultants, ensuring projects are designed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable codes, utility requirements, industry standards, and contractual obligations. The Director will serve as the primary point of accountability for project engineering deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead project engineering activities, documentation, technical coordination, and stakeholder communication.
- Oversee design development, multidisciplinary engineering reviews, value engineering, and technical due diligence.
- Manage relationships with engineering consultants, EPC contractors, utilities, equipment manufacturers, and regulatory agencies.
- Establish engineering standards, design criteria, technical specifications, and quality-control processes.
- Review and approve civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, and interconnection designs.
- Support site feasibility, utility coordination, permitting, procurement, and equipment selection.
- Coordinate engineering deliverables with project schedules and construction milestones.
- Identify technical and design risks and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
- Support construction teams with RFIs, design modifications, field issue resolution, and commissioning activities.
- Develop and manage engineering budgets, schedules, and resource plans.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, civil, mechanical, or a related engineering discipline.
- At least five years of engineering experience, including three or more years in a leadership role.
- Experience supporting utility-scale solar, battery energy storage, substations, transmission, or related energy infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems and the civil and structural design requirements of renewable energy projects.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams and external consultants.
- Working knowledge of NEC, NESC, IEEE, NFPA, IBC, and other applicable standards.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple large-scale projects simultaneously.
- Strong analytical, project management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Hands-on experience with Procore is required.
Preferred Experience
- Utility-scale solar projects exceeding 50 MW.
- Experience working within PJM and MISO territories.
- Working knowledge of substation engineering and design management.
- Field engineering and construction issue-resolution experience.
