Job Summary
The Maintenance Ranger position performs recurring grounds care, maintenance, light construction, and cleaning tasks necessary to operate Virginia State Park facilities. Includes cleaning restrooms, mowing grass, weed eating, trash and litter removal, cleaning picnic pads, maintaining park equipment, buildings, trail, and bridges. Successful candidate must be able to safely operate a chainsaw and spray applicator after apprenticeship training; demonstrate the ability to safely operate, trailer, and transport tractors, implements, and other heavy equipment on park lands and public roads; and demonstrate a willingness to efficiently operate independent of constant supervision as well as assist in training new staff.

Key Duties And Responsibilities
- Perform janitorial duties, including cleaning public restrooms, bathhouses, and park facilities.
- Perform ground maintenance, including mowing grass, weed eating, leaf removal, and trash and litter removal.
- Operate motorized equipment such as trucks, trailers, tractors, UTVs, and mini excavators.
- Assist with vehicle and equipment maintenance (small engine repair and preventative maintenance).
- Assist with tree cleanup with the ability to operate a chainsaw after apprenticeship training.
- Perform skilled facility repairs (basic electrical, plumbing, and carpentry tasks associated with overnight rental facility upkeep.
- Assist with leading and training others.
- Position requires working outdoors in all types of weather, stand for long periods, traverse uneven ground, and carry, pull, and/or lift up to 50 lbs; unassisted.
- Position requires shift work to include weekdays, weekends and holidays.
- Experience performing grounds and facility maintenance, including cleaning restrooms, mowing grass, weed-eating, trash and litter removal, and cleaning picnic pads.
- Experience with park equipment and ensuring safety conditions on park grounds including trails, and bridges on the property.
- Experience operating a chainsaw, spray applicator and flexibility to complete required apprenticeship training.
- Experience operating trailer, transport tractors, and other heavy equipment on park property and public roads.
- Position requires working independently with minimum supervision while maintaining efficiency.
- Prior Knowledge of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.
