Mortgage Examiner
Anticipated Starting Salary Range: $51,400 - $70,000

The State Corporation Commission (SCC) seeks a Mortgage Examiner with a passion for public service and protecting the public interest in Virginia by maintaining a safe, sound, and competitive financial services environment. Joining the Bureau of Financial Institutions, the Mortgage Examiner will conduct examinations of mortgage companies. The Mortgage Examiner will review the mortgage companies’ operations, internal controls, financial statements and records, policies, procedures, and practices as well as any Virginia Mortgage loan records. The candidate selected for this position will also assist with or conduct special investigations as needed. This position requires frequent travel in and out of state (approximately 25 to 50% of the time). Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct examinations of licensed mortgage companies.
- Review and analyze operations, financial statements, policies & procedures, advertising, and mortgage loan documents for compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Conduct on-site examinations of mortgage companies that could require overnight and Sunday travel (both in and out of state).
- Assemble documentation to support examination and investigation findings and prepare detailed reports of examination, investigation or other memoranda.
- Assist more senior analysts during examinations and investigations.
- Perform related work as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Related work experience in the mortgage industry, in mortgage regulation, and/or in financial auditing and examination.
- Without related work experience, a bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, economics, finance, criminal justice, or a related field is a minimum qualification.
- Knowledge of basic accounting principles is essential.
- Knowledge of the mortgage industry and state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to mortgage companies is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and SharePoint.
- Strong organizational skills and a high level of written and verbal skills are essential.
- Excellent attention to detail is a must.
- Ability to analyze information and form logical, well-reasoned conclusions is essential.
- Ability to manage tasks independently, be self-motivated, and to work effectively on team-based examinations.
- Ability to travel in and out of state and to adapt easily to changing work environments.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with SCC staff, examiners from other state agencies, and industry personnel.
