Virginia Western is seeking to fill a full-time Biology Assistant Laboratory Manager position with an anticipated fill date in January 2026. This position supports the lab manager by performing any and all functions necessary to support each semester’s biology labs including: preparing, and cleaning up for each laboratory, ordering materials, maintaining inventory, maintaining equipment, maintenance of all policies, procedures, and quality assurance practices, and development of laboratory preparation manuals for new courses. Provides instructional assistance in laboratories and in absence of instructor, proctors exams and provides instruction for short durations. Instructs students and faculty in the proper use of laboratory equipment and materials, as well as lab safety.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Experience in laboratory operations, methods and equipment, including compliance with OSHA standards and familiarity with sterile technique. Ability to use computers and software applications is necessary. Ability to handle BSL-1 and 2 organisms in a college laboratory setting is essential, as is experience in lab/stockroom management. Ability to work in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment; ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment; strong communication skills; willingness to work with various departments on campus and with industry; commitment to student success. Knowledge of the basic principles of Biology and Biotechnology; the principles of aseptic technique, the methods used to culture prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Knowledge of regulatory guidelines regarding the conduct of biology laboratories; good oral and written communication skills; a strong desire to be in the academic environment where students are the primary focus; a positive attitude toward faculty and students and the desire to work with a team of highly motivated instructors; the ability to perform basic clerical duties (filing, record keeping, preparing requisitions, etc.); the ability to maintain an orderly stockroom; ability to assist in instructional duties in general biology. Knowledge of instructional technology and audio/visual equipment and microcomputers is preferred. Proficient in PC Windows based operating environment and related software. Ability to work effectively in a diverse community and meet the needs of diverse student populations, faculty and other internal and external customers served. Regular and prompt attendance of support staff members is an essential element in the efficient operation of the academic division. Must be able to maintain regular and punctual attendance and be able to work effectively and get along with a wide range of people and organizations.
