Reports to: Curator of Exhibitions

Position Status: Part-time; Non-Exempt

Duration: Internship period up to 150 hours

Hourly rate: $13.00/hour

Position Or Project Summary

The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) seeks a candidate for the position of John R Nelson Curatorial Intern, who has an authentic interest in the mission and work of the VMHC. The John R Nelson Curatorial Intern will support the Virginia Museum of History & Culture's (VMHC) Curatorial Affairs team by implementing visitor surveys and conducting historical research at the VMHC and other repositories to inform the redesign and interpretation of its signature exhibition, The Story of Virginia. This position offers hands-on curatorial experience and the opportunity to develop research skills and knowledge of Virginia history for students interested in pursuing a career in museums and public history.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist curators in identifying and reviewing materials from the VMHC collections and other repositories for potential inclusion in exhibit content
  • Conduct audience research for VMHC exhibitions, including in-person surveys, data gathering, and working with other stakeholders
  • Compile research findings for use by curators, museum educators, and other staff
  • Participate in exhibit development meetings with VMHC staff and other stakeholders
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Necessary

  • Excellent research abilities using primary, secondary and digital sources
  • Knowledge of American history, gained through coursework; knowledge of Virginia history desirable
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with archival resources
  • Well-organized, methodical, able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritize and thoughtfully plan work activities while being able to adapt quickly to changing needs
  • Accuracy and attention to detail

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Current student pursuing an undergraduate degree in History, Museum Studies, Public History, American Studies, Art History, or relevant field
  • Experience and/or willingness to learn collections management systems or similar software
  • Previous museum training, internship, and/or volunteer experience a plus

The Ideal Candidate Will Have

  • Knowledge or insight into the history of people in Virginia
  • Experience in and comfort with talking to people
  • Managed a project, in whole or in a group, from start to finish

Notes & Special Requirements

  • Flexible work hours around student's schedule - one semester for the fall of 2026. Average 6-12 hours per week.
  • Position not to exceed 150 hours
