Genetic Counseling Coordinator (MFM)

Purpose & Scope

In addition to providing direct patient care, the Genetic Counselor is responsible for performing a variety of clinical and care coordination activities with a high degree of competency and autonomy. This position requires knowledge of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and hospital policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of high-quality prenatal genetic services.

Primary Duties

· Collects and evaluates family, medical, and pregnancy histories to assess genetic risk and communicate that risk in a clear, patient-centered manner.

· Orders, coordinates, and follows up on a comprehensive range of prenatal genetic testing, including cell-free DNA (cfDNA/NIPT), carrier screening, single-gene testing, and diagnostic testing through multiple reference laboratories.

· Interprets and discloses genetic test results, including complex findings, to patients and families and coordinates appropriate clinical management and follow-up care.

· Coordinates prenatal diagnostic procedures, including chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and amniocentesis, by obtaining informed consent, facilitating procedure-day logistics, and managing specimen handling and laboratory submission.

· Provides counseling regarding pregnancy management options and facilitates appropriate referrals for complex prenatal diagnoses.

· Conducts preconception genetic counseling consultations, including risk assessment, family history evaluation, carrier screening coordination, interpretation of results, and counseling regarding reproductive risks and available reproductive options.

· Collaborates closely with Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians, sonographers, nurses, laboratory personnel, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive, coordinated care for patients with complex pregnancies and genetic concerns.

· Serves as a genetics resource for Maternal-Fetal Medicine providers and other members of the healthcare team by providing expert consultation, education, and guidance regarding genetic testing, test interpretation, and management of complex prenatal cases.

· Maintains timely, accurate, and thorough clinical documentation in accordance with departmental and organizational standards.

· Functions independently and effectively in a high-volume clinical environment while managing multiple priorities and competing demands.

Education

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or Genetics required.

Experience

Two years of genetic counseling experience preferred.

Certification/Licensure

Certification through the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) is required within one year of hire. Virginia licensure is required upon ABGC certification. For new graduates, Virginia licensure as a supervised genetic counselor is acceptable until ABGC certification is achieved.

Compensation Range: $78,582.40 - $143,000.00 annually
