Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts.

The Carroll County Health Department is seeking a detail‑oriented and customer‑focused Office Services Specialist to support daily operations and serve as the first point of contact for clients and visitors. Working within established policies and procedures, this position provides essential administrative and program support, including scheduling appointments and meetings, performing data entry and routine transactions, preparing correspondence, maintaining records, ordering supplies, and responding to questions about available services. The specialist ensures efficient workflow and helps connect community members with the appropriate programs, staff, or resources. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a service‑oriented environment, communicates clearly, and values supporting public health initiatives within the local community.

The Virginia Department of Health offers 12 state paid holidays (additional days or hours maybe granted by the Governor), medical, dental, vision and life insurance, retirement plans (including 401a Cash Match and 457 Deferred Compensation Plan) as well as sick, family/personal, and annual leave.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of office and administrative principles and practices
  • Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software applications
  • Ability to interpret and follow established procedures and guidelines
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers, verbally and in writing
  • Considerable skill in the operation of standard office equipment
