General Laborer
Job Summary
The general laborer assists in supporting various construction projects, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and safely. The general laborer’s contributions directly impact the mission of delivering high-quality construction services.
Duties and responsibilities
- Earth moving: Operating excavators, bulldozers, and backhoes to dig foundations, trenches, and holes for infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, and pipelines.
- Compaction: Using compactors and rollers to level and compact earth, asphalt, or other fill materials to create a stable roadbed or foundation.
- Material handling: Operating equipment like telehandlers and loaders to move heavy and bulky materials around the job site, load trucks, and assist with material placement.
- Paving and surfacing: Using concrete mixers, pavers, and other spreading machinery to lay surfaces for roadways and other structures.
- Drilling and demolition: Operating jackhammers, hydraulic hammers, and other powered tools to break up old pavement, rock, or other structures during demolition and site preparation.
- Assisting skilled trades: Supporting specialized workers, such as pipelayers, with tasks like preparing trenches, handling materials, and operating surveying equipment.
- Site maintenance: Using smaller power tools and vehicles, like wheelbarrows and utility vehicles, to maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Safety adherence: Performing regular maintenance checks on equipment and strictly following safety procedures and protocols, including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Qualifications
- Physical fitness: Must be able to perform physically strenuous tasks, lift heavy objects, and work long hours in varying weather conditions.
- Equipment operation skills: Depending on the role, a worker may need to know how to safely operate and perform basic maintenance on a variety of hand and power tools or heavy equipment.
- Mechanical aptitude: A basic understanding of mechanics is helpful for operating and performing routine checks on machinery.
- Attention to safety: A strong commitment to adhering to all job site safety protocols is essential to prevent accidents.
- Communication: Must be able to follow directions from supervisors and work effectively as part of a team.
- Licensing and certification: Some heavy equipment operation may require specific licenses or certifications, with many skills learned through on-the-job training.
