Duties & Responsibilities:

The Executive Director for Operations provides strategic and operational leadership for facilities, space management, and project execution within the VCU School of Medicine (SOM). Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Business Affairs, the Executive Director oversees the School’s Project Management Team and leads the planning, implementation, and administration of large-scale operational initiatives that support the School’s mission of excellence in education, research, and clinical service.

This position serves as the primary liaison between the School of Medicine and central VCU units—including Facilities Management, Real Estate Services, Safety and Risk Management, and Technology Services—ensuring the School’s physical and operational infrastructure supports institutional goals and provides a safe, functional, and efficient environment for faculty, staff, and students.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Planning

  • Provide vision and leadership for the operational strategy of the School of Medicine, ensuring alignment with the university’s strategic priorities.
  • Partner with School and university leadership to anticipate and plan for operational needs related to growth, renovations, and new initiatives.
  • Lead operational process improvements to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and customer service across SOM departments.

Facilities and Space Management

  • Oversee all aspects of space allocation, utilization, and planning across the SOM’s academic, research, and administrative units.
  • Coordinate with university partners on capital planning, building maintenance, and renovation projects.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive space inventory and utilization metrics to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Ensure compliance with university and state regulations related to space, facilities, and safety standards.

Project Management

  • Lead the School’s Project Management Team responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing operational projects.
  • Oversee project timelines, budgets, and deliverables, ensuring successful execution in collaboration with stakeholders and vendors.
  • Establish project management frameworks, standards, and reporting mechanisms that promote transparency and accountability.

Operational Oversight and Administration

  • Manage budgets and resources related to operations, projects, and space planning.
  • Supervise and develop staff within the project management and facilities teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Serve as the School’s primary point of contact for emergency planning, facility-related incident response, and safety coordination.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, engineering, architecture, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Direct experience working in an academic medicine center and health system.
  • Minimum of 10 years direct experience working in project management and building and space utilization planning including the oversight of management and maintenance of all facilities within an academic medical center such as capital projects, renovations, and space planning.
  • Demonstrated progressive leadership experience in operations, facilities management, or project management within a large, complex organization.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets, resources, and personnel effectively.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and strategic planning skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in business administration, public administration, engineering, architecture, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Professional certification in project management or Lean Six Sigma
  • Experience leading large-scale facilities or capital projects in a multi-site, complex institutional setting.
  • Knowledge of state and university procurement, space, and facilities policies and procedures.
