VCU Engineering’s research collaborations with industry, community, and academic partners regularly yield breakthroughs in pharmaceutical engineering; smart cities, sustainability, and clean energy; materials development; health care, regenerative medicine, rehabilitation, and medical device development; data science and better security for cyber and cyber-physical systems. Its multidisciplinary, entrepreneurial approach to engineering education immerses undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students in meaningful research investigations throughout their studies.

As part of the VCU AI Cluster Hire in Artificial Intelligence for Public Good, the Biomedical Engineering Department (BME) at VCU invites applications from qualified candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to begin in the Fall 2026. Biomedical Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University offers the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees and collaborates closely with clinicians and biomedical scientists on the VCU Medical Center in downtown Richmond, Virginia. There are presently 18 faculty in the Department.

Position:

Candidates should possess a sincere desire to engage in research that makes a positive difference in our community and human kind utilizing Artificial Intelligence and Clinical and Translational Research. The department is especially interested in candidates able to work with collaborators in the Division of Cardiology in the VCU Department of Internal Medicine and the Pauley Heart Center. The ability to teach undergraduate and graduate core courses and develop new courses in these areas is also highly desirable.

Qualifications:

Faculty candidates should have a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or a related discipline and are expected to teach courses in the program at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Successful candidates will be expected to secure extramural funding and develop a research program that expands and complements existing expertise in the Biomedical Engineering Department and the Department of Internal Medicine. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU. Candidates must desire to actively participate in creating and nurturing a highly collaborative, creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial culture.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Teaching: The faculty member will be required to teach courses within the Biomedical Engineering curriculum and to mentor students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Courses will include undergraduate and/or graduate BME courses as well as courses in the ENGR curriculum (as appropriate). 2. Research: Faculty at the Assistant Professor rank will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, as appropriate, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department and the College of Engineering. Collaborative research and scholarly activity with the medical campus and its associated Schools is required as well as with the VCU Hospitals (as appropriate). 3. Service: The faculty member will be involved with service activities for the department, the College, the University, and for professional and scientific organizations. 4. Clinical: As appropriate, the faculty member will be involved with collaborative activities in scholarship and service with clinical scientists primarily in the VCU Hospitals and the School of Medicine.
