Position Summary

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provides direct patient care and clinical support to physicians and advanced practice providers in a fast-paced outpatient medical practice. The CMA is responsible for assisting with patient examinations, performing clinical procedures within the scope of certification, documenting patient information accurately in the electronic health record (EHR), promoting excellent patient service, and ensuring efficient clinic operations while maintaining compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, CLIA, and practice policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Prepare patients for examination by obtaining vital signs, height, weight, BMI, and medical history.
  • Document chief complaint, allergies, medications, and health history in the EHR.
  • Assist providers during examinations and procedures.
  • Administer medications and immunizations as ordered by the provider.
  • Perform EKGs, spirometry, hearing and vision screenings, and other diagnostic tests as directed.
  • Collect blood, urine, and other specimens according to protocol.
  • Perform point-of-care testing (CLIA-waived) following quality control procedures.
  • Prepare and sterilize instruments and examination rooms.
  • Remove sutures, change dressings, and provide wound care within scope of practice.

Clinical Documentation

  • Accurately document patient encounters in the electronic medical record (eClinicalWorks preferred).
  • Enter laboratory, imaging, and referral orders as directed by the provider.
  • Review and reconcile medication lists.
  • Process prescription refill requests according to provider instructions and office protocols.

Patient Communication

  • Educate patients regarding medications, treatment plans, preventive care, and follow-up instructions.
  • Answer patient questions within scope of practice.
  • Return patient phone calls and electronic portal messages promptly.
  • Coordinate referrals and diagnostic testing.

Administrative Support

  • Maintain examination room supplies and inventory.
  • Ensure all clinical equipment is properly maintained and calibrated.
  • Assist with scheduling patient appointments when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and confidentiality.

Compliance

  • Follow OSHA, HIPAA, CLIA, and infection control standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Report safety concerns promptly.
  • Maintain required certifications and continuing education.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification (AAMA or equivalent).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to perform clinical procedures safely and accurately.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a physician office or outpatient clinic.
  • 2 Years eClinicalWorks (eCW) electronic health record.
  • Experience in primary care, family medicine, or internal medicine.
  • Phlebotomy experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures.
  • Ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Work Environment

  • Outpatient physician practice.
  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases.
  • Frequent interaction with patients, providers, and staff.

Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
