Blazers Achieve Student Support Services (SSS) Peer Tutor
Primary Function: To tutor and/or mentor underrepresented and diverse populations (e.g., low-income, first-generation, students with disabilities, etc.) to be academically and non-cognitively successful to increase retention and graduation of at-risk students.
The Peer Tutor will perform duties related to the operations of Blazers Achieve Student Support Services.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates competency in the subject areas in which he/she is tutoring.
- Facilitates and helps staff with activities.
- Completes required professional development.
- Document the time and a brief description of all tutoring contacts.
- Attends tutor orientation and training.
- Reports students’ progress to the Assistant Director.
- Evaluates students’ academic and noncognitive (e.g., time management, planning, etc.) needs.
- Documents bi-weekly timesheets.
- Maintains FERPA.
- Works as a collaborative team member.
- Reports to the SSS Assistant Director.

- Understand sensitivity toward the student’s needs.

- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate information to students.
- Possesses oral, written, and non-verbal communication skills
- The student must keep all matters of a sensitive nature confidential, document student interactions, and communicate student issues immediately to the Blazers Achieve SSS Director.
- Candidates should have a level of maturity and ability to work with others.
- Willingness to problem solve and work independently.
Education, Experience, Licensure:
- Student must have verification of tutoring subjects of an A or B or 2.00 GPA and have a recommendation from a faculty from the area in which he/she is tutoring.
- Ability to work with underrepresented students (i.e., diverse culture, ethnic, and economic background, students with disabilities) or leadership ability - for example, a Best Buddy or mentor, Eagle Scout, ROTC or military experience, organizational and time management skills.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
Physical Demands:
Normal physical demands for successful work in a normal office environment. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods. Ability to utilize hands for general office work including typing, filing, answering telephones, and writing.
Work Hours will vary depending on the Peer Tutor’s schedule. A part-time student may only work a maximum of 20 hours per week; no matter how many different departments the student works.
