This is unskilled and semi-skilled work in the cleaning and maintenance of the rooms, halls, common areas, fitness center, gymnasium, and staff workspaces within the Villa Park Recreation Center and Park and Recreation Facilities. The employee in this class performs routine manual custodial duties, which cover various tasks in the care and maintenance of these facilities. The employee in this class may perform the routine standard custodial duties with little direction and is permitted latitude in planning work methods. Maintains safety standards and ensures quality customer service at all times. Work is supervised by the Superintendent of Parks, Buildings, and Grounds, who provides instructions and inspections as needed.
Working Hours
- This is a part-time non-exempt position scheduled for up to 20 hours per week on Saturday and Sunday.
- Additional hours are available as assigned.
Picks up trash, vacuums rugs and carpet and cleans restrooms; cleans walls and windows; dusts and polishes furniture, artwork, décor; mops, vacuums, waxes and polishes floors; cleans fixtures, drinking fountains, doors, handles, countertops, vents, etc.; maintains an awareness of proper safety procedures and guidelines and applies these in performing daily activities and tasks; Determines that cleaning equipment is in proper working order and takes corrective measures if necessary; works through the supervisor to replace depleted cleaning supplies and/or equipment; may cut grass and shrubs; sweeps, cleans and shovels walks; cleans window wells; keeps outside premises in neat and orderly condition; readies rooms for various events, programs, receptions, and meetings; watches for evidence of damage, fire or illegal entry and reports such to proper supervisor; checks operation of heating and air conditioning equipment, power and lighting fixtures, plumbing and water fixtures, and alerts supervisor if servicing or repair work appears needed. Performs all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Qualifications
Attainment of the knowledge equivalent of a high school education; and prior custodial work experience or a willingness to take a training program in custodial work; and the ability to pass a Village-administered, work-related, medical/physical examination; or an equivalent combination of training and/or experience.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities (if Applicable)
Strong knowledge of cleaning and sanitation requirements at a public facility and common cleaning equipment, tools, materials, and supplies; strong knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions; skill in providing efficient customer service and communicating clearly and objectively both verbally and in writing; ability to prioritize work and exercise independent judgment and initiative; ability to carry out oral and written instructions; ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, center visitors, elected officials, and the general public; skill in the safe operation of handheld power tools and some knowledge of construction and maintenance materials.

An employee is regularly required to talk and hear clearly and exchange information with other employees, patrons, and the general public. Frequently required to lift, walk, sit, and stand for prolonged periods of time; carry, push, and/or pull-walk; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing ladders, and/or crawling. Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 75lbs regularly, 100lbs occasionally. Tasks may involve possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids, or tissues, and possible exposure to communicable diseases, and wearing protective equipment, such as latex gloves, per OSHA regulations, is required.
Salary And Benefits
- Starting salary: $20.0/ per hour and limited PTO time.
- This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Paid time off is available per Village Ordinance. Regular part-time employees may participate in wellness programs, including access to the Villa Park Recreation Center fitness room and indoor track.
