Investigative Aide

The Village of Downers Grove is accepting applications for an Investigative Aide in the Police Department. This position supports detectives in the investigation of criminal complaints by maintaining files, organizing intelligence data, handling follow-up investigations, monitoring real-time applications, and performing other administrative duties. A successful candidate will organize their work, set priorities, and meet critical deadlines while demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and empathy when handling sensitive, confidential information.

Major Duties and Functions:
- Composes reports and correspondence
- Performs intelligence analysis by reviewing reports, crime bulletins, and statistical data to identify trends, patterns, and hotspots. Disseminates intelligence information to patrol officers and investigations personnel
- Completes basic background checks on applicants for employment with the Village, various Village licenses and permits, and, as needed, in criminal investigations
- Updates and maintains various written or computerized logs of assigned cases, crimes committed, and other intelligence information. Answers routine information requests from outside police agencies
- Fingerprints applicants or crime victims, provides procedural information, and serves as a liaison to the Police Department complainants. Assists with victim-sensitive interviews when appropriate
- Prepares photo lineups for review by victim(s) or witness(es). Gathers additional information from victims or witnesses on routine matters or as requested by Detectives.
- Meets with crime victims and completes computerized composite sketches of offenders
- Maintains vehicle title and registration information for fleet vehicles assigned to the Investigations Unit, Administrative Personnel, and those awarded by seizure.
- Assists with monitoring various law enforcement real-time operations tools, including GPS tracking software, video management systems, and license plate recognition databases.
- Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Strong analytical and research skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google products (Mail, Drive, Sheets, Docs, Slides, Maps)
- High degree of competence in basic computer skills, including operating systems navigation, word processing, spreadsheet creation, internet browsing, email management, digital file management, presentation software, and online communication tools

Education and Experience:Associate’s degree preferred, with some education in criminal justice. Previous experience in law enforcement preferred. A combination of education and experience that produces the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is also acceptable.

Salary and Benefits: The full salary range for this position is $56,422 - $77,580, with a maximum starting salary of $67,706.
