What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker III position at Village of Brookfield?

The Village of Brookfield is seeking qualified applicants for the full-time position of Maintenance Worker III.  The salary range for a Maintenance Worker III is $80,662.40 - $92,518.40.  This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of Village water, sewer, storm drainage facilities and systems, forestry and public property, streets and alleys.  This individual is expected to perform at a higher standard than a Maintenance Worker I and II based upon the job knowledge and job assignment.  A Maintenance Worker III works as a crew leader over lower-level maintenance workers and other Maintenance Worker III workers or works independently.  This is a non-exempt and union position and works under the general supervision of the Utilities Superintendent.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with the planning, scheduling, and implementation of construction, maintenance, and operation and construction activities designed to provide quality water, sewer, alley, street, drainage, forestry and public property service for the Village.
  • Assists in the training of lower-level employees performing the duties of maintenance, construction, repair and operation of water, sewer, street, alley and storm drainage facilities, public property and forestry services.
  • Inspects meters, streets, alleys, drainage and sewer systems at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections and maintenance activity for his or her assignments.  
  • Determines and arranges J.U.L.I.E. location of gas, telephone, power, television, water, sewer and streetlights lines from the appropriate sources prior to any excavation, ground, drilling, stumping, etc.  
  • Responds to S related complaints or concerns and explains findings to supervisor.
  • Contacts residents and business owners in area where services will be discontinued and explains when services will be shut off and how soon it will be turned back on.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
  • Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel and sand.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor or mechanic; cleans equipment.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting and replacement, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, water and sewer main and pipe repairs, laying and backfilling, forestry operations, public property and all other public works related projects.
  • Cuts, fits, lays, repairs, taps, cleans and flushes water mains, pipe, gates and fittings on repair of mains and services and installation of services, fire hydrants and drinking fountains; assists in shutting off broken sections of water mains.
  • Assists in the training of lower level employees to increase their skills in maintenance, construction and repair of water, sewer, street and storm drainage facilities, forestry operations and public property.
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the Public Works Department.


Desired Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent, and
  • Four (4) years of experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair, or
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid State Driver's license and CDL certification.  


Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.  


Tools and Equipment Used
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, street sweeper, front end loader, backhoe, street breaker, jetter/inductor truck, street roller, man lift, road grader, stumper, mower, skid steer tractor and attachments, forklift, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, aeroil propane kettle, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch and all related equipment.  


Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to stand and talk to hear.  The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.  

The employee must frequently lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.  The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and rick of electrical shock.  The noise level in the environment is usually loud.
