POSITION OVERVIEW
Under the direct supervision of the Water Supervisor, the Water Operator I, performs entry-level work related to the operation, care and maintenance of the Village’s water, sewer, and collection systems. Employees perform routine tasks requiring the use of acquired skills and knowledge. Assignments may involve working with members of a crew or working independently.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Perform general maintenance of water system, including checking pumps, wells, collection systems, chemicals and performing sampling.
- Respond to boil orders by performing repair process and public notification.
- Witness samples of new watermains.
- Check lift stations on a weekly basis.
- Repair water main breaks when required.
- Perform hydrant flushing and quarterly tower draining.
- Fire hydrant maintenance and repairs.
- Perform sewer rodding.
- Read water meters on a rotating basis.
- Replace, install, and repair water meters.
- Assist with water/sewer locates when needed.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- May perform welding duties as required.
- Assists the Streets Division and Building Divisions when necessary.
- Performs snow removal duties when required.
- Other duties and projects as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
For successful performance in this position, the incumbent will need to demonstrate the following:
KNOWLEDGE of:
- Welding or the ability to learn welding.
- Water/sewer equipment and systems, lift stations, and wells.
- Ability to use applicable hand tools and equipment related to the position.
- Ability to lift or move up to 100 pounds.
- Standard practices for installing water mains and appurtenances.
- Functions and operating methods of a variety of equipment and tools used in water supply work.
- Rules and regulations of the IEPA pertaining to the distribution system and production and EPA requirements for water/sewer systems.
SKILLS in:
- Prioritizing work and exercise independent judgment, wisdom, common sense, and initiative using initiative, discretion, and judgment within established procedures guidelines and rules absent of supervisor.
- Time management and organization to effectively perform his/her job.
ABILITY to:
- Be on-call 24/7 on a rotating basis.
- Work rotating/evening/weekend/holiday shifts.
- Properly operate and care for heavy equipment.
- Work cooperatively with other employees, supervisors, and the general public.
- Distinguish sounds such as warning signals, approaching vehicles, and persons speaking at varying levels in noisy environments.
- Work under time pressures and critical deadlines.
- Perform detailed work accurately and to initiate and maintain necessary follow-up.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and systems.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
- Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate tools and equipment as well as equipment controls reached with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to talk, hear, and smell and stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
