The Program Assistant aids with the planning, setup, facilitation, supervision, and cleanup of assigned Parks & Recreation programs. This position supports program instructors by creating a safe, organized, and positive environment for participants while providing excellent customer service to participants and their families.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists program instructor in setup, cleanup, and program facilitation in assigned recreation programs.
  • Assists with participant supervision and engagement while maintaining a safe and positive program environment.
  • Supervises children during youth programs and activities.
  • Enforces program rules, safety procedures, and emergency procedures as needed.
  • Assists with preparing program materials, equipment, and supplies before and after programs.
  • Provides excellent customer service while communicating professionally with participants, parents/guardians, instructors, and staff.
  • Attends required staff meetings, orientations, and trainings.
  • Reports participant concerns, incidents, injuries, or behavioral issues to the Program Instructor or Recreation Supervisor.
  • Represents the Parks & Recreation Department in a positive and professional manner while interacting with participants, families, staff, and the community.

Additional Job Functions

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.
  • May be assigned to other seasonal programs based on department needs and availability.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
For successful performance in this position, the incumbent will need to demonstrate the following:

  • Safely assist with the setup, operation, and storage of recreation equipment.

  • Work independently with minimal supervision while also functioning as part of a team.
  • Follow written, verbal, or diagrammatic instructions.
  • Perform simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, copying figures, counting and recording.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office Suite applications such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, and other applicable software.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and maintain punctuality and consistent attendance with advance notification of absences.
  • Handle confidential material and information in an ethical and professional manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Communicate effectively, verbally or in writing, with participants of all ages.
  • Analyze situations quickly and objectively to assist in determining proper course of action.
  • Demonstrate good customer service skills with the ability to problem solve complaints.
  • Work cohesively with peers and supervisors.
  • Work hours beyond the regularly scheduled workday when needed and pre-approved.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS including:

  • Frequent standing and walking between work areas.
  • Sedentary office work may be required.
  • Working outside, with exposure to outside atmospheric conditions; occasional fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
  • May be exposed to stressful situations as a result of human behavior.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS including:

  • Finger and hand dexterity to handle, feel, or operate tools and equipment and to operate standard office equipment.
  • Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, make color distinctions, and depth perception sufficient to safely perform essential job functions; ability to smell fumes like odorous gas; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone.
  • Occasionally bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, and pulling drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling materials and objects weighing up to eighty (80) pounds.
