What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Tax Preparer position at Viking Tax & Accounting?
Who We Are:
Viking Tax & Accounting has served individuals and businesses across the Great Lakes Bay Region since 1988. For over 35 years, clients have trusted us for accurate work and personal relationships, and today we’re building on that foundation by bringing tax preparation, bookkeeping, payroll, and financial planning together under one roof, supported by modern technology. We’re a small, close-knit team with offices in Merrill and Saginaw.
Who You Are:
You’re detail-oriented, take pride in getting it right the first time, and enjoy helping people make sense of their finances. You stay calm and organized during busy season, communicate clearly with clients, and like working in a team where your effort is noticed and rewarded.
What You'll Do:
As a Seasonal Tax Preparer, you’ll be the person our clients rely on to get their returns done right. You’ll guide them through the process from start to finish, combining technical know-how with the personal attention Viking has been known for.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare individual (and, as experience allows, small business) federal and state tax returns
- Process client drop-offs by reviewing submitted documents, following up with relevant questions, and explaining tax results in clear, easy-to-understand language.
- Review returns for accuracy and completeness before filing
- Use our tax software and client portal to manage documents and communication
- Keep client files organized and confidential
- Collaborate with our tax, bookkeeping, and payroll staff
What We’re Looking for in a Candidate:
Essential Pre-requisites:
- Prior tax preparation experience (seasonal experience welcome)
- Ability to work between January 15th-April 15th
- Hands-on experience with Thomson Reuters UltraTax CS
- Active PTIN, or ability to obtain one before the season starts
- Strong working knowledge of individual tax law; EA, AFSP, or similar credentials a plus
- Comfort with tax software and digital document workflows
- Availability during tax season, including some evenings or Saturdays as needed
What We Can Offer:
- Competitive hourly rate
- Bonus based on the number and type of returns you complete, so you’re rewarded for both volume and complexity
- Incentives for accuracy, because quality matters as much as speed
- A supportive, experienced team and the stability of a firm with 35 years in the community
