SUBSTITUTE RECRUITMENT ON CALL AS NEEDED

Substitute work is on-call and as-needed and there are no guaranteed hours as a substitute. As a substitute, we ask that you make yourself available no less than three (3) days per week and that you work within your stated availability.

SALARY: RANGE 35 ($30.94/HR)

Under the general direction of an assigned school Administrator, participates in a wide variety of security services at District high schools and other sites, ensuring the safety of persons and property of various kinds, maintaining order and enforcing rules and regulations governing student conduct and serving as liaison between site administrators, police and other security staff assigned to that location.

Minimum Qualifications Required to Apply

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and experience and two years of experience working with youth in a structured, institutional environment. Supplemental course work in basic law enforcement. Experience working with at-risk youth is highly desirable.

The following must be attached to your application:


  • Campus Security Certification (24-hour course) in accordance with Education Code 38001.5
  • Completion of PC 832 training is required within six (6) months of employment
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification
  • A valid California Drivers License
  • Current DMV printout

Essential Duties

Patrols school facilities including parking lot areas on foot and in motorized vehicles, circulating among campus personnel and students to detect and prevent improper conduct, persons annoying others, damage to furnishings or facilities, theft, injuries, unsafe situations, substance abuse and infraction of school attendance or closed campus policy; report safety hazards observed at sites while on patrol.
Observes and provides for control of student behavior in classrooms or in non classroom activities; enforces District and school regulations pertaining to day and evening student activities and sporting events including crowd control; conducts surveillance of assigned areas to prevent unsafe or disturbing activities, preserve order, and enforce standards of behavior and crowd control.Controls access to District facilities by approaching and identifying unauthorized persons and persuading them to comply with the law, school rules and proper conduct; may remove or escort unauthorized visitors from school campus; supervise and participate in traffic and parking enforcement on campus and District property.Inform site administrators and District safety personnel of causes and effects of student tension on campus and safety- security problems as they arise; applies necessary physical restraint to break up fights and/or to protect self and others; use handcuffs, pepper spray as needed.Counsel and advise students and others regarding violation of rules and regulations; escort students to the health office or the appropriate administrative offices for disciplinary action as necessary.Search students and their belongings, lockers or vehicles for illegal or inappropriate materials; assist site administrators in conducting searches according to established District procedures; assist police investigators as necessary. Assist in the investigation of school incidents, complaints, injuries, or vandalism; may search and detain students at the direction of school administration; appear at school hearings or court to testify as a witness as necessary.Writes a variety of incident reports, including citation, injury reports, accident reports, theft reports and vandalism reports; keeps a log to record activities and incidents that occur on the assigned shift; determine need for writing referrals and write referrals according to established guidelines.Discuss problems with students to dissuade them from destructive or injurious behavior (gang associations, drugs, etc.) toward themselves and others; discuss student's behavior with parents to further assist in corrective action; refer students to counseling centers or a crisis counseling center at the schools.Maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and community; communicate with students and staff to provide and receive information regarding student activities; assist and direct campus visitors to authorized parking areas and appropriate offices.
Operates a variety of equipment, including District vehicles, hand held radio, personal computer, tape recorder, copier, school alarms and other related safety equipment; drive vehicle in support of essential duties; observe legal and defensive driving practices; may transport students from school to home with other District staff.
Respond to emergency situations such as site lock downs, civil disturbances or gang violence at or near a school site; take action to prevent or intervene in altercations; assist in directing emergency evacuation or lock downs as directed by administrators and public safety agencies; render first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed.Attend necessary seminars, conferences and training programs to remain current in the field; may serve on school, District or community committees and meetings by providing input and recommendations on policies and procedures related to safety, security, crime prevention, parking and traffic issues.Check and secure doors, rooms and building and safeguard equipment; inspect for vandalism, illegal entry, theft and fire.Refer pupils to appropriate administrator in cases of flagrant or repeated violations of school regulations, and assists teachers when requested in dealing with unruly pupils.Monitor students boarding and unloading from school busses; assure student cooperation according to school and District rules and regulations.Communicate effectively with local law enforcement and School Resource Officers (SRO).Assist other Campus Security in adjacent areas.Perform related duties as assigned.

Learn, interpret and apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures Stay current with all laws and regulations relating to essential duties including but not limited to: topic specific seminars, training and conferences Speak clearly and logically and operate communication devices and other equipment Understand and carry out oral and written directions, regulations and procedures Use physical restraint to break up fights and for self protection purposes Maintain sensitivity, objectivity and cultural awareness Observe and retain names, faces, and details of events Pursue, apprehend and constrain persons,attend refresher training at District expense, sit and drive in a vehicle.
