Position Summary
The Sustainability Reporting Intern plays a key role in supporting clients across the utility sector by ensuring the accuracy of utility data, billing, and payments while helping them align with evolving sustainability and compliance requirements. This position combines strong analytical and data management skills with customer service, helping clients interpret data, resolve issues, and advance their sustainability goals through reliable and actionable insights.
Key Responsibilities
Utility Billing & Data Accuracy
- Collect, review, and enter utility invoices (electricity, gas, water, waste, etc.) into internal and client-facing systems.
- Validate usage and cost data against historical trends and contract terms to identify anomalies or billing errors.
- Maintain up-to-date databases and dashboards to support ongoing utility management and sustainability reporting.
Analytics & Sustainability Insights
- Analyze utility data to identify cost drivers, consumption patterns, and efficiency opportunities.
- Support the development of sustainability KPIs and benchmarks (energy intensity, carbon footprint, etc.).
- Translate analytical findings into clear recommendations that help clients reduce costs and environmental impact.
- Contribute to client-facing reports and presentations summarizing utility performance and sustainability progress.
Compliance & Reporting Support
- Assist clients in meeting sustainability and energy-related compliance requirements (e.g., SB253, SB261, ENERGY STAR, local benchmarking ordinances).
- Support the preparation and submission of ESG and sustainability disclosures, ensuring data accuracy and completeness.
- Stay informed on evolving utility, carbon, and sustainability reporting standards to guide client compliance efforts.
Client Service & Collaboration
- Act as a trusted liaison between clients, utilities, and internal teams to ensure seamless communication and issue resolution.
- Provide exceptional customer support by responding promptly to inquiries, explaining data findings, and guiding clients through sustainability processes.
- Participate in client calls and meetings to review utility data, sustainability performance, and strategic opportunities.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Energy Management, Data Analytics, Finance, or a related field.
- Experience in utility billing, sustainability reporting, or data analysis a plus.
Skills & Competencies
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, formulas, data validation, and visualizations).
- Strong understanding of utility billing structures, tariffs, and common billing discrepancies.
- Familiarity with sustainability or utility data platforms (e.g., Greenly, Watershed, ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, etc.).
- Exceptional attention to detail and data integrity.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a proactive approach.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a customer service mindset.
- Ability to manage multiple client accounts and deadlines in a fast-paced, data-driven environment.
Preferred Attributes
- Experience supporting sustainability compliance (e.g., local benchmarking ordinances, SB253/SB261, GHG inventories).
- Knowledge of ESG and carbon accounting principles.
