The Director of Human Resources serves as the senior HR leader for a growing, multi-state organization of approximately 1,500 employees. Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President, this role drives human resources strategy while overseeing day-to-day HR operations, compliance, payroll, talent acquisition, employee relations, total rewards, and HR technology. As a trusted advisor to executive leadership, the Director plays a pivotal role in supporting organizational growth, acquisitions, workforce integration, and culture development. This is a highly visible leadership opportunity for a strategic yet hands-on HR executive who thrives in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment.

Salary Range: $150 – 160K with annual incentive bonus

Roles & Responsibilities:

HR Leadership & Strategy

  • Serve as senior HR advisor to the executive team, aligning people strategy with company growth, acquisitions, community openings, and transitions.
  • Lead and develop the HR/payroll team, facilitating weekly leadership meetings and setting departmental priorities.
  • Direct HR integration activities for acquisitions and transitions, including workforce onboarding, benefits enrollment, PTO transfers, and compliance requirements.
  • Partner with Business Office Managers and Executive Directors through ongoing communication, hiring support, onboarding, and training.

Talent Acquisition & Employer Branding

  • Lead recruitment strategy, employer branding, applicant tracking, hiring processes, and manager interview training.
  • Implement retention-focused initiatives, including realistic job previews, job-shadow programs, and structured onboarding reviews.
  • Drive employee engagement and recognition programs, including employer-of-choice initiatives.

Employee Relations & Compliance

  • Oversee employee relations, advising leaders on performance management, discipline, and terminations; review all involuntary separations.
  • Manage EEOC claims, unemployment hearings, and relationships with employment counsel.
  • Maintain employee handbook, HR policies, and multi-state compliance with employment laws and regulatory requirements.

Performance Management & Training

  • Direct performance review programs, ensuring alignment between evaluations, compensation, and development.
  • Oversee new hire orientation, compliance training, and leadership development programs across all communities.

Total Rewards & Benefits

  • Lead benefits administration, open enrollment, ACA reporting, and 401(k) plan governance.
  • Manage compensation programs, salary benchmarking, merit increases, and employee financial wellness offerings.

Safety & Workers' Compensation

  • Oversee workers' compensation, claim management, settlements, safety programs, and OSHA compliance.
  • Partner with sites and vendors to support accident investigations and workplace safety initiatives.

HR Technology & Operations

  • Own HR systems, including ADP Workforce Now, MakeShift, and Formstack workflows.
  • Ensure data integrity, reporting, and workforce analytics to support leadership decision-making and regulatory requirements.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required; SHRM-SCP or SPHR certification strongly preferred.
  • 7 years of progressive HR experience, including 3 years leading an HR function or team; multi-site experience required.
  • Senior living, long-term care, healthcare, or hospitality industry experience strongly preferred; familiarity with licensed care environments (assisted living, home care) a significant plus.
  • Demonstrated expertise in multi-state employment law and compliance (Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Colorado preferred), employee relations, and claims management.
  • Hands-on experience with HRIS/payroll platforms (ADP Workforce Now strongly preferred), benefits administration, and 401(k) plan administration.
  • Excellent judgment, discretion, and written/ verbal communication; able to remain calm and objective in sensitive situations and to influence leaders at all levels.
  • Highly organized self-starter comfortable operating with minimal supervision in a lean, hands-on corporate environment; able to shift priorities with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to travel periodically to communities across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Colorado.
