Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Engineering Manager to guide the technical direction of the CNBC Web & Make It engineering team. This individual will blend strategic thinking, strong hands-on development skills, and mentoring capabilities to drive technical excellence and innovation across our platforms. The Engineering Manager will serve as both a contributor and a coordinator—ensuring that architectural standards, team alignment, and engineering best practices are upheld while continuously delivering value to our audience.

Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership Drive technical excellence and innovation across the team and product ecosystem
- Lead architecture and system integration efforts to ensure scalable, performant, and secure solutions
- Define and evolve platform direction, architectural patterns, and best practices
- Spearhead technical spikes and experiments, evaluating emerging technologies and frameworks
- Team Guidance & Collaboration: Provide technical mentorship and foster continuous learning and development
- Lead code reviews and offer thoughtful, constructive feedback
- Deliver system design presentations and promote knowledge-sharing
- Ensure alignment across engineering managers and tech leads for platform consistency and interoperability
- Hands-On Contribution: Contribute to the codebase depending on project needs
- Lead by example with high-quality, maintainable code and strong development practices
- Operations & Planning: Engage in technical capacity planning to support scalability and growth
- Own system SLAs, metrics, and observability to ensure platform reliability
- Serve as the escalation point for production issues and lead cross-functional incident responses
- Collaborate on roadmap planning to align technical strategy with business objectives
- Process & Visibility: Continuously improve development processes to enhance efficiency and quality
- Champion team visibility by highlighting accomplishments and technical contributions
- Support delivery coordination and people management when needed
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- 7 years of professional software development experience, with at least 3 years in a technical leadership role
- Proven experience designing and integrating large-scale distributed systems
- Deep understanding of software development best practices including testing, CI/CD, observability, and performance optimization
- Demonstrated ability to lead through influence, alignment, and technical guidance
- Technical Proficiency Experience with a modern JavaScript framework (i.e. React.js)
- Strong skills in either CSS/Sass development
- Experience implementing responsive designs using HTML and CSS preprocessors (SASS, PostCSS, LESS)
- Proficiency with modular JavaScript, async patterns, and DOM manipulation
- Experience optimizing rendering performance - critical rendering path, TTFB, caching strategies, optimizing javascript execution.
- Strong skills in unit testing and test driven development
- Proficiency in integration testing (e.g. Cypress)
- Understanding of bundlers, transpilers, and preprocessors (Webpack, Babel, SASS)
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git)
- Experience working in cross-functional agile teams
- Familiarity with DevOps tools and practices Experience with CDN integration and site performance tooling
- Understanding of editorial workflows or CMS-driven environments (WordPress or similar)
